Up here in the great state of Minnesota, this weekend...Nov 7...is the opener of the firearms deer season. I was curious if and how raising deer affects your deer hunting.

More than raising deer, the dnr's inability to catch poachers, has really killed my will to hunt. I havent seen a decent buck in quite a few years. Raising deer has probably lowered my desire to hunt a little. On the plus side, I dont think buck fever is much of a problem anymore.

Cervid: deer
I personally have very little interest in deer hunting any more. In part because of the fact the wild deer are so small and the odds of there being one worth shooting being to slim.

I also think land access is an issue in some way for me. I have a place to hunt, but God forbid the deer cross the fence line before expiring. The deer might as well have fell off the face of the earth then.

I think the third thing for me is I grew up hunting in a group. We did deer drives and hunting had a social side to it. We always hunted with the same group and enjoyed the 9 days of rifle season. When group hunting became hard to do because of land access, and because a couple decided to start stand sitting by themselves, as well as some of the old timers that made things fun died, the group disbanded. That was the end of the social side to hunting for me.

I think those 3 issues more than anything have ruined hunting for me.

Roger you hit on the essence of hunting period. It’s not about killing any more that playing golf is about winning every time or playing base ball is about hitting a home run every game. I really like the way you used the word social. I use the word comradely. (Hope I spelled it right.) I, we all wish the anti hunters would realize hunting as all sports is about fellowship. It’s a time to forget about the trials and tribulations of this world and to focus as to why we were made. To have fellowship with others and the Father.

Blessings

I agree for sure....Hunting for me IS and always was about bonding be it with friends, nature, God or my son. some of my best days of hunting there has not been an animal harvested.......but the memories that were made that day were forever!! I can't give up hunting, I can't give up that bonding and I surely want my son to be able to experience the same thing!!!

Just got in from hunting this weekend....corn fields all over so that is making it tough. Sat on stand most of the time and never saw one deer.Even sat right by my deer pen and nothing. But it was still alright. Get to hunt with my son, brother and nephews. Youngest nephew shot his first deer. It's all about the hunt and not so much what you get.
