I have a yearling doe that has started growing antlers in the last couple of weeks. Does this mean that she is getting to much protien? Or is this just something wierd that happens sometimes? I have heard that some guys have does with anwhere from 2" nubs too a full 8 point rack. I tried searching for does with antlers on here but found nothing on it.

Thanks Kyle Myers

I've had two does with antlers. All I can tell you is they will have babies. Just a weird thing some of them will do. I don't think extra protien has anything to do with it.

I wrote a big article on does with antlers in the fall 2009 issue of Deer Tracking. It has more to do with the antler growth process and it usually boils down to a hormone imbalance. May be ovarian tumours or adrenal gland malfunction. Very often it is caused by problems with the reproductive organs. Some does like this can have fawns, some are infertile and some are pure hermaphrodites.

Largest antlered doe shot in hunting season (I believe) was a 179" doe in Kansas. Hope that helps. This article can be found on pg 40-44 in Fall 2009 Deer Tracking. If was fun to research.

I have seen two wild doe's that were killed with antlers in my area over the past 20 years both were in velvet. I read some place that 1 in 20,000 doe's will grow antlers but who know's I would think it would be less than that.

Thank you for all the input everyone! It just caught me off guard when I seen them the first time. I actualy felt them before i seen them. I was rubbing her head while looking at another deer and thought what the heck is on her head. I guess time will tell if she can have fawns or not.
