CWD in domestic Cervids. This is a big herd with “satellites”.

2. Chronic Wasting Disease Found in Marathon County [WI]

Wisconsin Ag Connection

December 3, 2013

A white-tailed deer on a hunting preserve in Marathon County has tested positive for chronic wasting disease. On Monday, State Veterinarian Dr. Paul McGraw announced that the five-year-old male deer and was one of about 370 animals in the 351-acre farm.

State animal health officials say the buck was killed on November 4 and tested as part of regular procedure when deer go to slaughter. This is the first time in five years that an animal raised in a hunting preserve tested positive for the brain wasting disorder.

"The DATCP Animal Health Division's investigation will look at the animal's history and trace movements of deer onto and off the property to determine whether other herds may have been exposed to the CWD test-positive deer," Dr. McGraw said.

The state has since quarantined the preserve and the other three registered farms owned by the same entity, which stops movement of live deer from the property. The business will be allowed to conduct hunts on the quarantined preserves, because properly handled dead animals leaving the premises do not pose a disease risk.

Cervid: Whitetail Deer

After reading the story one has to wonder.* This is one reason that all farms should keep a sample of any tested deer.* One goes to the state. One goes to your vet and one stays with you untill you get a negitive result.* I would hate to think that the states would lie and have these testing places in their pockets but they know who does business within the deer business and they know all to well about tracebacks and forwards. In this case, The sky could be the limit.* A closed double fenced herd should be as safe as you can get. They brought none in but have sent many out. Hope for the best on this one.

What amazes me is this "Infected" deer was alive and HEALTHY at 5 YEARS of age from a "DISEASE" That is "DEADLY" and ALL Animals DIE within 36 months.................? WEIRD

It did say they would allow them to continue hunting, so at least that is a plus.

does anybody know if this deer was raised on their farm or if it was born in the preserve? if it was raised on the farm the implications could be monumental, especially when the animal was 5 years old. no telling how many trace outs it would involve.

It looks to me Wisconsin has*taken a*science direction in handling the CWD problem on this farm more than the people in Iowa did.* I for sure like the last statement that properly handled dead animals leaving the propertly do not pose*a disease*risk.* I thank the people in Wisconsin for a realistic science view of the problem and not knee jerk emotion.

Jack,

the worst part is nobody knows how this will play out due to all the press that Wisconsin has received lately for the high percentage of infection in the wild.

hopefully they take a realistic approach. destruction of entire herds is completely insane. the knee-jerk may not be wisconsin it might be all the other states, unfortunately. lord knows we've already seen that happen.

Thank you for recognizing that, Jack. Yes, I agree maybe they are finally seeing the light, but it has a whole lot of money and time.

I believe the email said they had double fence for 5 years and the buck was 5 years old. It also sounded like it was born where it was harvested. But they shut down all movement untill they figure it out im sure. Trace anything..Lets hope not!
