The prion protein is well conserved across mammals, and the misfolded protein is the causative agent in many animal-specific prion diseases, including chronic wasting disease (CWD) in deer and elk. Prion diseases are caused by misfolding of endogenously expressed prion protein from the native and homeostatic Prpc conformation to the infectious and pathogenic PrPsc conformation. Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies are of great interest for many reasons: the onset of disease inevitably leads to neurodegeneration and death, the potential of interference with food production through transmission both within and between agricultural species can have severe economic impacts, and the potential exists for zoonotic transmission. Our group has hypothesized that immunotherapeutic targeting of the PrPSc conformation would clear the infectious agent / infected cell while sparing native PrP, and vaccines may have potential application in prevention of CWD transmission or therapeutic treatment of disease.

Our research has focused upon identifying and optimizing three components of a potential CWD vaccine: a CWD-disease specific epitope (DSE) that induces antibody responses, a carrier protein to increase the magnitude and duration of antibody responses toward DSEs, and identification of delivery systems for oral delivery of the above DSE-carrier protein ro cervids. We have developed and optimized DSEs from three distinct regions of PrPc. Vaccination trials using iterations of these DSEs elicit high titers of epitope-specific serum antibody. A second generation carrier protein has increased both the duration and magnitude of antibody responses when compared with our previous carrier protein. Lastly, two delivery systems were effective in inducing antibody responses when administered orally to white-tailed deer. We have identified the vaccine components necessary for delivering a CWD vaccine to wild cervids. These findings will direct our final CWD vaccine formulation and delivery system. (Quote)

Thats great news but remember that it would have to be approved for use in the U.S. since it is being developed in Canada!!!!

So true but this is fighting material a good lawyer could use in a case like whats going down in Iowa. Sooner or later this has to come to a head.

Actually, in part due to the industry's lack of strength in questioning the "science" of CWD and the anticipated higher standards and regulations, we have chosen to focus on the compensation......not particularly where many of us feel we should be at a time when funding has been taken away. This is our new reality. A voluntary program made involuntary to be allowed commerce, now quarantining your animals and ground for five years without any federal funding.

General rule of thumb, just as you are what you eat, you are what and who you support.

I sincerely hope there will be more state associations represented at the USAHA Conference this October in San Diego. See for yourselves and work to make changes.

Our Ag (breeding facility) case begins tomorrow and Wednesday and last day will be next Monday. Wish us luck!

The Science

I know we have, In our state but when it falls on deaf ears its useless. Now take that same info with a good lawyer and a fair unbiased judge and you may get somewhere.

I know in our case they have no backbone and they play follow the leader. I believe many other states do the same. I said all along that the first state that takes this to court will set the tone for all states. Im sure we all wish you guys the best of luck because i think if you win and prove how all these states,Govt,DEC and DNR are using this cwd to try and rid us...The Competition .. then we all will win. You lose. Then the skys the limit for what they could impose on us.

Mike, Iowa Statute provides indemnification to livestock producers found with an infectious and contagious disease as well as CWD response plan. We feel we have exhausted every resource at the state and federal level and have a strong case or we wouldn't have fought it. Many states probably do not have the same statues that have been in place in Iowa for many years.

Our preserve case in November will clearly address the science portion of CWD. Once we get court behind us, more details and facts will be shared.

Again, we need to make changes at USAHA and federal level so producers will not be forced as we have been to pay legal council to obtain compensation or find a workable solution for all parties involved.

The Feds clearly are not that concerned about the disease or they would be testing every wild whitetail and elk harvested for CWD and their animals are free ranging.
