Virgil. I agree and kinda disagree. I would love to sell to in state buyers. The problem there is no preserves wanna pay for what a deer is worth. I have yet to sell a deer but a close friend has sold or atleast tried to sell to instate buyers. They offered $2000 less than what the deer sold for to an out of state buyer. But the preserve in pa still wanted the same price for a hunter to come harvest that buck. Why should us as growers take less and the preserve still charge the same?

Farmers could change that action if everybody worked together.Of course its much harder to do that in a state that has over 1000 deer farms and ranches.

Virgil, Be careful for what you ask for. If they shut your border down they will never reopen them. They say up here its a 5 year deal to see what CWD does or does not do. Yeah OK...To think they will say..Oh we were wrong on this and are going to reopen the trade with other states! *Dont believe that will ever happen myself!

I agree 100%. In my area there are atleast 75 deer in 1 hour drive from me that I know of. Probly way more.

No way possible to talk to all them and convince them to hold their deer for better prices. I just heard of a group of bucks between 150 and 200 inches being sold for $1500 each. Ouch!!!! All 2 and 3 year olds...

It is interesting to look at these business cycles and see what is really going on. I personally have no problem selling a 150 class buck for $1500. But a 200 no dice there. These farms that do this will be out of business in a few years if not sooner or just continue to loose money which may be ok for them. But over the next few years there will be a decrease in farms selling animals and supply and demand is sure to kick in. The laws of economics are fixed, unless you are the US government!

Not sure I could be selling a 150 at 1500 when I could sell a buck fawn off the mom for 850! I guess a guy has to do whatever works for him!

You are right. Some people like yourself can not sell a 150 for $1500. 80-90% of the people I know would be more than happy with that average on there 150 class deer. My point more specifically was to distinguish the price difference between the 150 and the 200 class animal. Historically 150's have been averaging between 1000-1750 depending on a variety of factors including but not limited to; time of year, overall look and location. There certainly could be a substantial difference in the pricing between what Four Seasons Whitetails gets for there 150 class bucks and the rest of the country. Kudos to you for your hard work and development of relationships with ranches that will pay you more.

More deer farmers, more preserves, MORE HUNTERS,open borders = more $ for everyone and a stronger industry

Less deer farmers, less preserves, less hunters, closed borders = our opposition wins

I think we need to stop looking at this as " what can I get for xxx buck". Think we need to gear a little more towards " what is such and such preserve gonna get" for a buck that I raised, I medicated when it was sick, I bottle fed it, I aied it, I fed it..... All for such and such preserve to have my buck on their property for, in most cases, less than 48 hrs...

Sorry folks, I kinda took this thread and ran away from the original post. My apologies!!

Just don't understand why we can still bring deer in. All that does is hurt the farm forced to sell his deer in state. All I'm saying is long as we can't go out we don't need anything coming in either. When all gets settled then open her back up.

Most preserves in Pa know this and take advantage of it.

Our borders are closed to bringing in deer but we can sell outside of state. *Ny state will never open the borders again in my opinion. The Dept of Ag would love nothing more than to stop farms or ranches here and the DEC loves it. They have made statements many times.

*

I believe there is merit in the..Only being on their farm 48 hours statement. Its a fine line but farmers can dictate what ranches pay for their deer but its a very fine line. 50-50 does not work for some and there has been talk from farmers here to go with a 60-40 split in price. *I think in todays world a ranch would be willing to pay more for 120-170 bucks if he can find them and sell more of them. The profit may not come per head but it would with more hunts sold.

*

The last thing you want to do is !@#$% over your local ranches because without them we are all dead but a smart breeder today may not be the smartest breeder by going for 200 at 2 bucks. *If your state only merits so many 200 inch hunts but has unlimited 120-170 then my money is on selling 20-30 bucks that size and have no problem getting a tad bit more per head!
