Would this simple change in rhetoric re empower deer farming? It appears more & more likely that scrapie was the precursor to CWD so why not call it what it is & stop the other interests deflecting their responsibility onto the scapegoat.

You make a valid point. It used to be called chronic wasting syndrome and them mad cow hysteria broke out and the name changed. I as a few other researchers believe its more*a symptom and upon reviewing much evidence it does not fit the definition of a disease .

If scrapie became the colloquial term for this, it would stop a lot of the scapegoating on deer farming. It could change the game, particularly the big one which is public opinion, as Mr & Mrs Average could easily be explained the link between scrapie & deer.*

It would make a good exposé for a journalist.

This could also cause some big changes in the industry. If a certain genotype is shown resistant to scrapie in deer that line will suddenly increase in value while another may become worthless.

I'm not really thinking about that.*

Its pretty clear now that CWD is a variant of scrapie. This is could be the silver bullet, at least for getting those with agendas other than abating this disease off the industries back. There is no denying that there is prion disease in deer, however this highlights that at the very least the authorities & some orgs were way too quick to jump onto deer farming as the perpetrator of this disease. They were way too quick to to rename scrapie as CWD & in doing so deflected the entire responsibility back onto deer & elk rather than sheep.*

*

Yes, there will be big changes, but I wouldn't be relying on resistant genes in deer ATM, prions have already shown the ability to mutate & follow evolutionary principle i.e. scrapie to CWD. The biggest changes will be in the sheep industry not the deer. Hang onto your hat if this gets momentum! Even Terry S should be smart enough to see where this will go. I noticed he stopped posting a reply to this suggestion on QDMA, I guess in the short term this will play into his own agenda, but he is still no friend of deer farmers or anyone for that matter who will oppose his compulsion.

If scrapie can become the colloquial for CWD its still not a win as far as abating this disease itself, however at least it's abatement can be approached without the hindrance of those orgs with predetermined prejudice, bias or agendas against particular stakeholders in the deer industry. *

If someone knows a good investigative journalist, do their career a favour & point out a few of these inconvenient truths.

If someone can point these issues out to a journalist, don't forget to mention poor governance around this issue, both at organisational & regulatory levels. This is the icing on the cake & the cherry on top too.

Sharkey and I have had a couple of good email conversations this evening on this subject and wanted to thank him for reaching out and saying hello. I think him and I can forge a good relationship and exchange of information.

As far as terry s is concerned what do you expect from a high school drop out with no formal education in any related field of science and research!! And he is no friend of anyone in the agriculture industry, cattle, swine poultry producers that feed our nation. If he only could understand half of what he cuts and paste and spams and reruns *over and over . Sharkey look forward to* us talking more.

*I just wanted to bump this thought bubble.*

Hopefully the deer farming advocates have been able to maintain credibility after the scandal around "Deer MGR 200".*
