Ethics of email tracking?

I was wondering how would you feel if your students, co-workers, or professors had tracking embedded into the emails they send you?

It allows the sender to get a notification or log of the time and location the email is viewed by the recipient, for each time it is. There are many third-party services which allow you to do that and unless you install an extension into your browser to block tracking, you can't avoid it getting logged.

I have seen some undergraduates and grad students do it, when they are trying to keep a track of all the intern/PhD applications they send through emails, and knowing whether the lack of response is simply because their email has not been read is helpful. But I suspect that this practice is more widespread than I thought and knowing that someone might be sneakily keeping a track of how many times I read their email, where I am at while doing that, and what times of the day I do it is repulsive.

Probably there are certain contexts when doing so is professional, but I can think of very few.

I don't really find anything wrong with spying on someone's mail, as most of the time it can be done for security reasons and to keep track of what your employees are doing during business hours. Personally, I use this email spy to see if my employees are leaking important information about my company.
