Ethics of email tracking?

I was wondering how would you feel if your students, co-workers, or professors had tracking embedded into the emails they send you?

It allows the sender to get a notification or log of the time and location the email is viewed by the recipient, for each time it is. There are many third-party services which allow you to do that and unless you install an extension into your browser to block tracking, you can't avoid it getting logged.

I have seen some undergraduates and grad students do it, when they are trying to keep a track of all the intern/PhD applications they send through emails, and knowing whether the lack of response is simply because their email has not been read is helpful. But I suspect that this practice is more widespread than I thought and knowing that someone might be sneakily keeping a track of how many times I read their email, where I am at while doing that, and what times of the day I do it is repulsive.

Probably there are certain contexts when doing so is professional, but I can think of very few.
