Just needing a little advice, how frequent can you safely draw semen from a whitetail buck? Say in one fall / winter season. thanks!

For a WI buck I would say once in Oct mid to late. Then once in Jan mid to late if you feel it really must be done. But that depends also on how well he goes under and comes out the drugs. Too much can hurt the following years growth also.

MAIN REASON I SAY ONCE A YEAR IS CAUSE ITS HARD ON THEM - I DREW TWO BUCKS LAST SEASON AND THEY DIDNT WALK RIGHT FOR A WEEK *VERY GINGER FOOTED, AND HAIR ON END LIKE PAIN. *IM NOT SAYING THAT YOU COULDNT GET TWO DRAWS OUT OF A BUCK A SEASON BUT THE CONS OUT WEIGH THE POSITIVES (IN MY OPINION) *SEDATION PROBLEMS, TAKING TOO MUCH OUT OF THEM FOR THE NEXT YEARS GROWING SEASON, AND PAIN & STRESS*

When I drew Northern Yankee I couldn't get it scheduled until mid February if I remember correctly. The quality was excellent and I've been told later draws typically are of better quality but it was a small draw which I was also told was common with deer being drawn late. As for affecting antler growth he was down on his weight and wasn't in the best health already. He turned it around by late June and grew a helluva rack but whether knocking him down made him ill or slowed his growth he still turned out well enough I'm keeping most of his semen for my own use.

I would only draw the buck once between October 1 -14. After that they are wound way to tight by the rut. Late collections often are ruined with blood. I would have a DVM present and give him a full bag of ringers before reversal along with 2cc. Of Draxxin, 2cc. Banimine, and 2cc. of LongRange. An antibiotic is necessary because ecoli can be aspirated into the lungs. The ringers will drastically reduce the risk of myopathy and help him pass the sedation and reversal drugs from his system. Remember the person collecting the buck is going to get paid wether your buck is dead or alive. Do NOT collect the buck if he isn't calm when he is darted!!! Do Not be pressured by the tech collecting the buck to hurry!!!

Poor semen quality or stolen semen can hurt your future. Who you have collect your buck could effect your future reputation.

I agree w Bell 100%, we did did all the above plus B Complex, A,D&E vitamins and any vaccines we planned to give.* It was frigid when we drew my buck and we actually wrapped him in blankets to keep his body temp up.* Cold air and cold ringers can drop their body temp. We've only knocked down a few but knock on wood most are up moving around and eating acting normal very quick after reversal. Urine can also ruin the semen.* If it were me I'd take off feed and water about 18 hours ahead of time, should reduce chance of urine in semen and aspiration which is your number 1 fear.* I'm not nearly as experienced as most of these guys but that's just what I would do.* Also don't forget BAM will kill your deer if trying to draw semen.* Does anyone know if MK can be used?*

I have used MK with good results. It is my choice combo for collections.
