Who is using sexed semen? What % of does take for you?

Is the semen market better with sexed semen?

How much does it cost to have done and who is doing it?

Thanks

I haven't used sexed semen yet but I have looked into the cost. The best option for me at this point profit wise is still to pasture breed. If it were possible for me to run my synchronized doe in the handler and vaginally AI them with sexed straws the books would balance in my favor. They don't with the cost of paying for LAP about $200 per doe + travel, usually $800-$1000, and the cost of sedation/reversal drugs, the synchronization products, upkeep, and the cost of the electro-ejaculation plus the sexing which may or may not even be possible on the collection. You may also be out the cost for paying the person who collected the buck and be left with nothing if the semen cannot be sexed plus you will still have to pay a partial fee for the attempt by the sexing facility plus next day air shipping. Then every farm also has monetary loss because of mortality. Many doe die during the LAP process. We will continue to vaginally AI a few in order to keep out crossing.

It is a risky deal to do, as Jonathan hit on. It cost about $6000 to do, and then you need to have a good draw and good sorting. I would recommend having a few alternate bucks you would want to have sexed in case your target buck does not give you a good draw. The bad part is, when trying to sale it, you have to price it less than conventional, because it should not be split. I have been involved on 2 different bucks we sexed, and have been fortunate both times. Another thing to keep in mind is that you typically end up with less male straws than you would have had conventional straws. I believe this is due to the sorting process. I have straws left from Alley-Oop if you are wanting to grow your buck numbers. Of course if it is a buck you are wanting to market, I would say to take a chance once and see what happens. Or maybe draw conventional this fall and gauge the interest in the buck.

What, about the new chemical out thatparalyzes either sex sperm. It only cost.about 10.00 per breeding.

That would be great if it works. I know a few guys are going to try it. We might, since we have a yearling we are live covering to and drawing on. If it does not work, the girls will still get covered by the same buck. Personally, I would not try it on a straw I really wanted in a doe until some more information is available. I guess it is one of those cases that it might be to good to be true. Let's hope not.

If that chemical worked every dairy in the world would be using it. It is scientifically possible for a buffering agent to be added to a thawed straw that could possibly destroy the motility of male cells by creating a slightly acidic environment in which male cells degrade very quickly possibly leaving female cells with healthy acrosomes to penetrate the egg. This idea cannot be reversed to inhibit the female cells. Sexing agents are a joke.

I know several deer farmers who have already used the product. Some who post on here. Read the dairy blogs. It doesn't work.

I know of guys who have done it.* Best luck was to draw, sent it to texas for sexting and then used right away with great success.* The key here is all he wants is to have 200 inch 2 yr olds for a preserve so he uses his own good breeder and a bunch of good does.* As a breeder he is nearly doubling his income.* Face it, not many farms out there right now can sell does for more than $500 if they can sell them at all. Having does is worse than not having one at all because it literally cost you money.* If all (or majority) of your product is marketable you will be way ahead of the game.* I firmly believe that is where the future is going for guys to still make good money.

Sexing the semen fresh at my farm on the AI day would allow it to be done vaginally in the handler w/o the cost of sedation drugs. If that were possible, I would go for it. If one buck wasn't good enough quality to be sorted then another could be collected and sorted in a mobile lab at my farm. Some day when another way of sexing the semen is marketed or the other guys patent runs out this will be a helpful option for the industry. I know numerous people that have sent their bucks collection off and got 10 or 12 male straws or none at all. The cost of electro-ejaculation and the sexing is gonna cost you around $8,000. Plus the other fees associated with AI by LAP. I will take my chances pasture breeding. I figured it up even if you only get 50 percent bucks you are still ahead pasture breeding and selling your doe fawns to meat buyers for $75-$100 the end of August. I have also lost numerous breeder bucks over the years collecting them.

I agree with Bell, When its all about Input Cost and Bottom line...................$8,000+ for the "possibility" of an increased number of bucks? I will pasture breed 30 does to 2 bucks and go from there Rawhide last 3 years has thrown 3 to 1 buck fawns so if it ain't broke ?

That doesn't pencil out for me? Bell is also correct the Dairy Industry plus others for years eliminated unwanted off spring.............No one wants to talk about this................But it's a hard reality of this business!

We have drawn semen and gotten it sexed it was very risky we had our finger crossed we were lucky and got 49 male and 54 female straws. 15 of those male straws went to a Texas breeder. The semen was drawn last year at the end of October. Dr. Rachel Weiss drew the semen and Sexing Technologies did the sexing.

Is anyone even buying semen? Sexed or Conventional?* Would more people be prone to buy if you sold 1/4cc straws for a lot less and guaranteed it in one doe versus pricing it high enough it has to be split between 4 does via LAP cost which adds hundreds to the cost of breeding each deer?* I want to grow so conventional semen would be better for me, but with a small herd it doesn't make sense to buy high dollar semen because then all the does are breed to the same buck so for the more expensive priced semen sexed makes sense to me.* Thoughts?

We thought about doing that this fall on a few deer. This might be a good chance to get some feedback to see if it makes sense. I know a few farms are doing it, but a half straw still cost thousands at those farms. We are drawing on Alley and a nice yearling, I would not have an issue doing this for some of the straws. I like the thought of being able to diversify the herd more. I guess the down side for the seller is you have to make more contacts to sale the same amount.
