I've kicked around the idea of using sexed semen on a few doe this coming year. My question is this. Considering the cost of having the semen sexed and all the things that could go wrong. Is it worth it or not? I know several of my fellow deer farmers have already been here and done it so, if any of you all would plz give me your personal opinion I would really appreciate it!

I hear people who used it are having TERRIBLE conception rates * Lots of singles and wondering if it is worth doing! *Maybe I should try it myself so I know first hand! *Maybe not! *JIM

I have heard both good and bad. This year I heard of 2/10 taking and then also heard a 9/10. Lots of factors it seems and some of the guys had trips from it.

I am with Ryan. *I have heard some success and some not so good. *I purchased a couple of does last year that were LAP AI (not at my farm) and neither took. *Lots of factors that can affect the outcome...quality of the semen, how the deer are handled before and leading up to the AI. *I had one with Triplets and one with a single. *The single was 10 yrs maxbo daughter, on her way down possibly...wouldn't be surprised if that had something to do with it.

I bought 2 high end bred sexed semen does from the same breeder as rsanders32 and neither one took . In fact it looks like they may have been missed by the live bred back up. They are very small 2 year old does and very lean.

First year I got a single from a yearling doe.* Second year 1 of 2 took giving me twins. This year my LAP wasn't good at all so I disregard the fail this year.

Crunch the numbers based on 60% average conception after sexing semen and using it. It is a bad idea. You are better off from an economical standpoint pasture breeding and getting a 50/50 sex ratio. The only time it makes sense to AI is about every other year in order to outcross and introduce new blood.

And I got 165 straws male of the dad if anybody wants some... He's huge and pedigree is undeniable as well as ai results.message me I will be happy to send pics, pricing, pedigrees..up to u.. 1 $200 per head average lap AI cost

2 Travel expenses for AI tech $500

3 three bam kits $900

4 Upkeep per year on all 11 does @ $400 per head. $4400

5 Cost to collect the brood buck $1500

6 Fee to sex semen ? $2500

7 Lost time synchronizing does-? cost

8 Increased mortality risk of handling the does 3 times and aspirating during the procedure

9 how many collections are poor quality and can't be sorted also a potential loss of income.

10 EHD loss and risk associated with collecting a buck

I will keep the $10,000.00 in my pocket and watch my healthy bucks breed. It's kind of exciting lifting a new born fawns leg and checking its sex. I need my doe fawn too. I will gladly take 11 buck fawns and 11 doe fawns and the peace.

LAP AI'd 10 does to sexed semen. Used 2 different bucks, 5 straws each. 2 out of 10 does stuck. 1 out of each buck. Long story short,*the semen was bad.*Motility ranged from 30%-10%. I wish my AI guy would have told me at the time of breeding so I could have used different stuff. Live and learn.
