LAP AI'd 10 does to sexed semen. Used 2 different bucks, 5 straws each. 2 out of 10 does stuck. 1 out of each buck. Long story short, the semen was bad. Motility ranged from 30%-10%. I wish my AI guy would have told me at the time of breeding so I could have used different stuff. Live and learn.Sorry

I have a friend who stuck just 2 out of 20 and lost one doe. Several of the doe that missed to the the Lap AI then didn't breed until the 3rd cycle or not at all.

Why do breeders allow terrible quality semen to leave their farm?

I have had breeders show good motility reports from semen collections. After thawing and examining multiple straws under a microscope you wonder if your straws came from a different collection or were irregularly packed. A couple of years ago we AI exclusively to one buck. We split the semen 3 ways based on statements made by the owner and a motility report. Only 1 doe out of 12 stuck. We have been AI ing for 11 year and have never had that poor of conception. I ask my friend Gerald Yoder if his does stuck to the same sire and none of his did either. The seller said if we had split the semen twice it would have been guaranteed. While selling the straws the owner said the semen was so good it could be split three ways. We learned an important lesson. It matters where you buy and who you buy from.

Seems everyone is different but I will say Jason at Phoenix Whitetails has had great success with his buck Cyclone.* The semen is high quality and produces twins and trips.* I'm live breeding this year to get some good outcrosses but the next time I AI, it will be with Cyclone.

I also plan to continue AIing every other year. The purpose will be to introduce new blood and take a look at heterosis. If sorted semen can be successfully used to AI in the squeeze chute, we will strongly consider that method. We plan to AI 40 does this fall in the chute.

From all the research I did before we used sexed semen this year I learned the difference between lap and conventional ai on sexed semen is lap gives better conception rates, more twins and trips(as I was told conventional has higher rate for singles), and you need 1.5 to 2 straws per doe conventional as opposed to one straw per doe for lap. I also had a buddy do his own with cyclone sexed conventional ai this year in his chute and got 75% conception with both twins and singles... He did use two straws per doe.

We did our own AI this year. Full straw per doe we had 2 of the 8 take.

AI due date was May 25 we are still waiting on back up fawns. 3 bucks 2 does not to bad since we had 100% last year and ended up with 4 bucks.
