How does the buyer/sellers CWD date affect buying deer? Does this need to be taken into consideration before purchasing my first deer?

When you are buying your deer from another farm, you adopt their status.

Yes you willmtake on the date of the person you are purchasing the deer from......meaning let's say you had a deer already and it had a cwd date of 2002 and you purchase a new deer with a cwd date of 2006. With this your farms new cwd date would be the later date of 2006. Hope this helps......This is how it works in PA.

So is your farm status given by the month and year( April 2003) or just the year (2003)?

No it doesn't start or stop on the 1st of any given year. Month, day and year. My CWD status anniversary date here in Illinois is for instance March 18, 2002, but I have 90 days grace on each side of that to do my inventory report.

As long as they are at least 5years they will be considered certified. Once they are cetified it does not matter 6, 7, 8, 9 years it does not matter because once cetified you do not keep trac need to keep track of years. Just do not buy less than five years or you will go to that status.

Virgil - Is it even possible nowadays to buy and move a deer to a new place w/o it being at least 5 years certified?

I'm not positive, but I don't think Illinois will let any deer move anywhere w/o it being 5 years certified.

And yeah, like you said - 5 years, 10 years, it don't matter. It's all the same as far as the liberation in moving of deer.

Mark that's a good question......unfortunately I think if you are not paying attention you can purchase a deer without the 5 years status........it may have to be purchased within the state though......I am not certain about it for sure.....but I do know you can purchase an animal within the state that does not have any status which in turn would pull your status down with it. As for an out of state purchase without good status.....I would hope it's not aloud here in PA!

Yup we are dealing with this now. Bought a deer that is in ohio but that deer was brought into ohio from pa. Now everything is slowed down because they have do do a trace herd check from 5 years back on the pa herd and then do the normal health check and paperwork for the ohio herd and this is just a 2010 doe. It can get very frustrating at times but i do believe it is the best thing for us and the industry to make sure all deer are clean. I just hope someday that this talk of blood tests for tb/bur comes through. I have heard talk of this but you know about talk sometimes!!!!

LOL Yes Mike - we all know about ''talk'' sometimes! LOL You have yourself a great day Mike.

I'm gonna be w/o a computer for a few days, don't quite know how all that is gonna roll out. It'll probably be good. No...it will no doubt be good. Got a bunch of deer to cut up today. I spend way to much time on here sometimes, and it amazes me how the time can fly by once I'm on here.

The wife is taking our computer today to Kansas City to my daughter for her to use for her missions training this next two weeks, and as I type she is screaming for this computer so she can head out the door.......Nooooooooo! lol

Peace out!
