Seems everyone has a different number. I'm considering starting as a hobby and just curious, what is a good ratio of deer per acre?? I definitely would like to have SOME vegetation on the ground throughout the year if that's possible....just wondering what your setups have...

I just had my inspection by a wildlife biologist this past Wednesday. I have a pen that has 330 feet perimeter. He said I could have 4 does in there comfortably, but shouldn't go any higher. It comes out to about .2 acres of land.

Im not sure how much green would be left on the ground with 15-20 deer on an acre of land.My first pen was 2 acres and the state said i could have 9 adults in that pen and they ripped up that land pretty bad!!

In missouri you have to have at least 500sq feet 1st deer and 250sq feet for each additional deer .

Wow, that's it? I am in Texas. I have over 6000 square feet and they said I could only have 4 max. So if I was in Missouri, I could have 23 deer in it? I think maybe you left off a zero in your numbers maybe? Or that was the perimeter?

Big Buck Heaven, I believe that the ideal number of deer per acre depends on alot of different variables, one of which is your intended purpose in having deer. Depending on the context of the soil (clay, sand, gumbo, etc.) and the amount and kind of trees in a pen, I would say that 8 to 10 per acre and your ground will maintain grass coverage. That being said, even if you had just one deer, they should be in AT LEAST 1/4 acre, but preferably a 1/2 acre. They need and enjoy the room to run and get their exercise. I know people put deer in less and get by, but I'm talking ideally.

We are permitted for 350 deer on 13 acres. Always tried to get approved for more than you want because it doesnt take long for them to double, then triple, then...

In most of the deer parks around the world the average is 1 deer to 5 acres.

This is were there is no suplimentary feeding or rotation of pasture.

Its not deer farming, just an interesting bit of trivia.

My ideal is about 1 red or sambar to an acre & 2 fallow, chital or rusa to an acre, thats in the farm

The highest I have run long term is 6 to an acre, for reasearch on deer deterents & ecological differences (not just taxa)on rusa sub species, with ethics committee approval.Suplimentary feeding is required.

The smallest enclosures I use are one acre, 40mx100m (130ftx330ft) these also double as raceways.

Cheers Sharkey

I believe 6-12 per acre depending on grounds ability to sustan vegatation growth, foot traffic, drainage etc..... with this number you will still be mowing your pen and not always walking in the mud....

call your local Ag Dept and find out how many head of cow you can have per acre in your area. If I remember correctly it is 6 doe/fawn pairs to 1 cow/calf pair. That will tell you a realistic number for your area as this will vary around the country.

I run 4-6 adult deer on a 1/2 acre, but that comes with the luxury of having other pens to rotate. I've put as many as 12 in the same pen if there is plenty to eat, but they don't last long before it's time to move them or at least open up a neighboring pen that they can hit. I have a few places on the farm that are normally closed off to deer traffic (like my solid-walled alley leading up to the barn where the deer are put through the chute) and a couple of times per summer I'll open it up to a pen of yearling does and they'll clean it up for me.
