I have 5+ acres in Minnesota and 20+ in Montana, I intend to augment with feed, my experience is with White face steer.

Depends on how many deer you want. with 5 acres I can say probably between 20-30 deer. That's just me though I don't like my pens being too tight. Mainly depends on how big you want to start out and how big your pens are.

If you google economics of deer farming there a couple different things that will pop up. One thing I have always been told though is do not put more in than you can afford to lose. The two main ways that guys recommend to start is either put a large chunk of money into it and get a large set up with facilities and all or start small and slowly work your way up. As for the ratio I wouldn't recommend anything larger than 1:20. My ratio here is only 1:5 because I am just starting small and working my way up. Another thing I highly recommend is going out and visiting as many farms as you can because you will learn so much by going to the other farms.

I assume the twenty acres in Montana will be for collection of feed as you will not be able to have a game farm in Montana.

No new game farms are allowed in Montana due to a crappy law.

5 acres would have to be well planned to hold even 10 deer by the time you start sorting out breeders and age classes. It would be terribly overgrazed and you would be feeding forage and browse year round. In Minnesota as difficult as it is to sell deer you better plan to hold your deer 2-3 years longer than you planned. Don't put in more $$$$$ than you can afford to lose? You will enjoy a great lifestyle if you do it right.
