has anybody ever had a doe nip the tails over there fawns? I had a set of twins that seemed normal* at birth and at 3-5 days old they had bloody tails sprayed them with iodine. they healed up nice now and seem to be normal. anything I can do to prevent this from happening again?

I had it happen 2 yr. ago. Not only did she nip her own fawns tails , but the other two fawns in the pen as well. Caught her in the act. She now resides else where.

I have had this happen at multiple farms both in WI and TX. Best advice I can give you regarding her is send her down the road. She is a health concern to her own fawns and any others in the pen. This year was one of the worst cases I have had, she is what I call a community doe. She lets any fawn nurse from her no matter its age, and also nibbles tails. Took me 2 seasons unfortunately to determine who she was, very sly about it. As soon as I pulled her from the pen the biting stopped. Once a biter always a biter.

I wrote about this in my book Deer Whisperer. A doe with triplet doe fawns and she bites the tail off one but never touches the other two. Never figured out why this happens but watched a different doe do*the same to her single fawn . I yelled but the damage was done. Its like having a hair biting doe who keeps biting the hair off other deer, Only one solution (down the road dude). I don't think anyone has come up with the reason they do this tail biting. In April/2000

I wrote a article for Deer Farmer called Rabbits with antlers, fiction, whitetails with bunny tails*, fact. You can find it in Deer Farmer library. Ever try to sell a deer with a short tail , it ain't going happen. You either have to keep them or give them away for free.
