I have a buck fawn that was a runt and I had him on IV for three days after birth or he would have died. Now he eats, drinks, everything just fine. When he is jumping, running, and playing around and starts breathing harder he puts his head down and coughs. Sounds like he coughs flem up, but I never see any. Another thing is when he is standing there he streches his head way up and back. He has been like this pretty much all winter.

Thank You

his lungs might not be fully developed, or he may have only one

he is over taxing his lung capacity with exertion, you will probably see diminished antler growth as he survives first and grows antlers second

sort of like a human with a bad case of asthma

mine do the same thing when they have worms. I treat with Ivomec plus and then treat again in 2 weeks to kill the eggs. It works for me. Call if you have any more questions.

I would bet he will out grow it. Keep an eye on him so he don't get pneumonia. I agree with curtis, he has a lung that is not developed or has been damaged. Most deer outgrow this that I have seen.

I ran all my yearlings through the chute this weekend for deworming, vaccinating, and putting in RFID tags. Out of 26, I could hear rattling in probably 25% of them, and some sounded very bad. They've all been vaccinated and boostered, but wondering if there is a secret weapon vaccine? What do you guys prefer, especially for pneumonia? I've always had this trouble with yearlings but (like Prarie antler said) they seem to outgrow it. What will it take to only hear a cough every now and then? They all got 1.5 ml of Draxxin as well, hope this helps!

DJ Johnson, It coulld be worms or could be the first signs of pnuemonia.

Antler Valley, Draxxin is a good drug but takes awhile to take hold. Baytril,Nuflor (LA 300),Excede or good ol Pennicilin could all be a better first line of defense for some ailments.

good luck and keep us posted.

Wayne, thanks for the advice on antibiotics, but wondering more about vaccines? I'll be glad when these storms are finished! Worried about these big winds and my covered fence!

Billie Jo, I agree anytime we have our hands on our deer we use it..... it will do the trick!

Arimyicin crumbles 4 grm is what we top dress at times of stress, wild weather changes (like 92* yesterday and 42* today) dropping antlers or cutoffs, going from velvet to hard horn are all times it will help.
