Cervid: Western Canadian white-tailed deer
TB Blood Test Research Funded by Cervid Industry in 2009

The Cervid Livestock Foundation, along with several other state and national associations, funded another TB blood test research project in 2009. In 2008, the Elk Research Foundation and the Cervid Livestock Foundation granted $25,000 in research dollars to Pritest for a TB blood test. In 2009 Chembio was the recipient of the research grant to help make improvements to their TB blood test. Associations that helped fund the 2009 research project included Whitetail Deer Farmers of Ohio, Indiana Deer & Elk Farmers Association, Cervid Farmers of Michigan, New York Deer & Elk Farmers Association, Missouri Whitetail Breeders & Hunting Ranch Association, Whitetails of Wisconsin, Whitetails of Oklahoma, Exotic Wildlife Association and the Wisconsin Commercial Deer & Elk Farmers Association. All of these associations clearly see the need for this research and stepped up to the plate to help out financially. We thank them for their support.

Update on Chembio’s TB Blood Test Research

February 3, 2010

Chembio applied for the licensing of the Rapid Test (CervidTB STAT-PAK) in 2009. Their test was approved for elk and red deer in November 2009. They are currently in the process of trying to convince the CVB reviewer that there is sufficient data for white-tailed deer as well. If they are not successful in convincing them to add white-tailed deer, the test may be used off-label for any cervid species once they add the respective publication references to the product insert. Chembio is in the process of making kit labels and inserts for the final approval by CVB before they can start selling the test. Chembio does not think the tests will be available for TB testing in March of this year, but let’s keep our fingers crossed it is ready for use in the fall of 2010.

Chembio is also doing more research on their new and improved Rapid Test. The Cervid Livestock Foundation has pledged another $10,000 towards this research. With the new and improved test, there will be more accuracy and less false positives. The industry also stands a better chance of getting the test approved for more cervid species with the better accuracy.

If you or your association would like to help donate to this research project, please contact Laurie at 830-928-3143 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
