Cervid: Western Canadian white-tailed deer

It appears that NYU School of Medicine has developed a vaccine for CWD.

*

For more information, see this article.

*

However, the article also contains a bunch of BS ... "CWD afflicts as much as 100 percent of North America's captive deer population, as well as large numbers of other cervids that populate the plains and forests of the Northern Hemisphere, including wild deer, elk, caribou and moose."

*

I trust one of our deer associations will challenge these statements and set the record straight! I am disappointed that so-called "scientists" are so ignorant of the facts!

*

However, if there is a vaccine, then this would greatly benefit our cervid farming industry.

Cervid: Deer Farming
I read an article on this but they had a very small group that they tested it on. Guessing they will have to continue testing on a larger group before it is validated.

So 100% of captive deer are afflicted??? I would look very closely at the DNA of the one that is showing complete resistance. This is promising research but needs to be studied on a larger scale.

"5" animals challenged that were vaccinated. * """"""5:""""""" * * Thats about as scientific as me trying out an ehd vaccine on 5. As with sheep and elk most of us expect that there are genetic markers that make certain animals more resistant. *I don't think that any study with this low of numbers and not knowing genomic markers is worth a hoot. *Now 5000 animals, maybe. * I would like to read the scientific article *that goes with this study. *If anyone finds it please post.

with varied results with this vaccine maybe they are treating the result of a condition and not the initial cause????? *it would be like killing cancer cells instead of preventing them to form. *just a thought.

Not much to go on in that article. I thought the most promise for a vaccine was coming from producing antibodies preventing the production of PrP in cells, thus starving the prions of energy, rather than an antibody to a "prion like protein"? How will this "antibody work given that prions are the bodies own protein? It will be interesting to see how this vaccine distinguishes good proteins from bad.

I like the way jerrilee cave thinks.* I know this is supposed to be a prion disease, but I believe that helminths can play a role in the formation of prions.* Here's some interesting info about a newly identified helminth species in NY deer.* Not a new species mind you, newly discovered, circa 2012.* https://melittology.files.wordpress.com/2013/03/parasitology-2012-mcfrederick.pdf* You all might think me daffy, but I'm fairly certain I've caught the little vermin myself!* In me, they cause symptoms similar to river blindness.* I've tried going through the NIH, who does PCR testing for o. volvulus, the cause of river blindness, but they won't test for these species.* I might be able to drum up some interest at the local university though.* Also, I just noted yesterday an article about a manganese containing soil mineral that can break up prions.* That however, is under laboratory conditions.* http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19088299* http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21390367*Unfortunately, only the abstracts for these two.
