Hello All - Great website but are all you guys yankees? I am way down here in Coahuila, Mexico. I am thinking of improving genetics here via the following method. I would appreciate any 'devil's advocates' out there. First our ranch is 16,000 acres, 6,000 of which is high fenced and has a good number of 150 & 160 class bucks. I sure would like to see some 190 class deer. We harvest 2 or 3 160 class deer each year. The low fence has a very low population 1 deer/25 acre mainly due to predation. A situation I think I have corrected by harvesting many pumas that called the ranch home. Anyway, I want to put a 'breeder' buck or 2 in pens (the size of which I have no idea) and extract does from high fence just to breed wih bucks in pen and then release them back to high fence. Any excess does would be released into low fence.

1. How many does can a buck breed?

2. How to capture does (dart, trap)?

3. How big should pen be to hold buck year long and does during breeding season?

4. Biggest fear is puma getting in pens.

5. Would AI be better route?

Thanks for any ideas or warnings.

Texas has a great program going with their DMP program. Check with some of the TX breeders to get more info. I know Marty Berry does several lease bucks a year to this program. Give him a call.

I have some friends that have sold semen to Mexico,I also know of a breeder buck in Mexico that may have some semen for sale from the owner. And I know of a vet that does AI in Mexico -I think he may be flown into some areas.

My suggestion to you would be to have smaller more secure (electric outside) pens for your breeding and to grow out your bucks until their ready to be released into the larger preserve.

You may also want to buy more manageable does(bottlefed) to start with with better genetics-its often said the doe is more responsible for the offsprings size than the buck.

feel free to call if I can help point you in the right direction.

I would also go with the tame does. There is going to be alot of dead deer if you capture wild deer and put them in a pen. They will not handle that. With that being said I would have to say conception rates would be down. Good doe are cheap latly and I would just get a couple bred doe let them fawn out and then have these doe AI each year. That way you could have smaller more secure pens due to them being tame and with the saved money you could buy better doe. This i just a thought.
