1 month old, now what ?

Hi I'm Lucky's mom,

I have a one month old fawn, rescued around 1 - 3 days old. She's well, healthy, runs and plays. I have her on a feeding schedule of 30 oz of goat's milk a day. She nibbles around on grass, clover, weeds, leaves etc. but I feel like she needs more. I've tried lettuce, spinach, timothy hay, broccoli, all to no avail. She does like pumpkin puree. I have tried calf manna sprinkled with goat's milk powder, and/or mixed with pumpkin puree. She just rolls the manna around and drops it from her mouth.

Is she too little yet? I thought I saw something on here to begin adding calf manna around 2 weeks of age, but now I can't find the post for the life of me.

She drinks no water, has no interest in water. How do I help her with these things ??

Any advice or suggestions appreciated.

she looks to be doing good, I'd not worry about her drinking, just have it available.

BUT I would advise taking that collar off her. She will grow and it will become too small or she will catch it on something. A collar is a death trap waiting to happen.

Hi dtala,

Thank you for the reply. I'm happy to say that yesterday, I just happened to be looking out the kitchen window.....and ....gasp.....she was drinking water

Yes, I understand about the collar as well. That picture is just one of my favorites, and was taken before we built a pen.....32 ft x 28 ft. Does double duty for the dog too.

What about supplementing her goat's milk with additional food ? Does she need it ? Or since she's nibbling around on grass, leaves, weeds, etc. Then she's ok ?

I can feel her ribs......and it just bugs me.

you can get some pelleted deer mix at Tractor Supply and have some of it available to her.

I had to go to a friends place one night to dart his pet buck that had a collar on. He had moved his lower jaw under it and panicked, dang near killed himself running into , and over, stuff in the yard before I got there and darted him.

Hi, I'm new to your forum. I am doing Wildlife Rehab. for an antelope and some mule deer fawns. I live in Utah. Your forums have lots of good information!
I'm eager to learn from all of you how to best care for them, and how to get them not to bond to people.

thank you for allowing me to be part of your community!

Start introducing alfalfa, and Purina Xtreme Energy deer food is one of the best on the market. our fawns also love grapes and watermelon.
