Cervid: whitetails
doe with uterine infection

I have a 12 year old doe who has had a persistent uterine infection since her first week of fawning in early July 2021. She originally had thick whitish discharge and was treated with two courses of 7 day tetracycline within the first 2 months after fawning. She had one live fawn and another that was either born dead or died very soon after birth.

It has been difficult to tell if her infection has persisted as she usually licks the discharge off before I see it.

She has received 3 doses of Estrumate in the months of Sept-Nov. She completed a month and a half course of Excede about 10 days ago. Within a week of completing the Excede I have a multiple occasions noticed whitish discharge in her stall. On two occasions I have noticed her laying down and straining. Twice our vet has tried a uterine lavage, but cannot get the small tube past her cervix and we feel that she may have some scar tissue preventing the tube from passing. She had a sonogram which did not show any sign of a mummified fawn.

My vet has suggested some kind of iodine treatment, but one of the possible side effects can possibly cause hair loss which I would be more on board with if it was spring or summer.

She appears to look healthy, but now she is going off her feed. Does anyone have any suggestions?
