Hello Everyone!

I have a question as far as deciding which yearling to breed with this Fall. I have womb brother's that one of the two will get a few ladies this year. The one yearling we had to cut in May due to him breaking the one side right below the brow tine, that being said I'm very impressed with how the one side turned out, he would have been wide for sure. I'm also impressed with his womb brother who may not be as wide but certainly pretty as well. What is everyone's opinion!?

How many does do you have? Maybe split service between the two? I never liked more than 5 does per yearling buck.
Is the damage permanent? If so selling any offspring becomes harder then. That said I imagine your not thinking about that angle of the market but rather the stocker market. Which would dictate using the wider one provided he has good tine length and at least a 5x5 mainframe.
The brother has a nice shape to his rack.
One thing I looked at to predict future growth was the bases. Some will have thick bases that almost look like a glass of Coke foaming over. If that description makes sense to you. That can indicate the future ability of a buck to push more bone.
With the limited info given and the small pics I would lean towards the wider one myself. Stockers should be the goal and not selling offspring in today's market.
Just my opinion and good luck!

Thanks Roger! I appreciate your honest opinion and your helpful advice. The wider one we cut off about an inch above the pedicle which you can see he is starting to grow on that side again, that being said I think he should be okay at 2 next year. The wider one is showing what you described as far as the mass goes however is only carrying 4 on the good side (along with some kickers) and his brother is carrying a 5x4 frame but not as massive. As of right now selling shooters is all I'm interested in right now. We have done some AI with some different lines but it's more of a personal hobby which we enjoy doing, I try not to get my hopes up chasing after the breeder dream haha.

Sounds like the wider one is the better gamble for you then showing width and mass. Don't let the 4 point side scare you. If you recall a buck I grew a few years ago called Updraft. He was a 4x4 at age one. Scored 168 I think. At age 2 he was 268 and change. And at 3 was over 315 or 317. And added mainframe points as well.
His more typical and wider brother always stayed the widest of the two boys.
Just keep them healthy and good luck to you!

Definitely familiar with those two boys Roger, awesome looking deer congrats! I've definitely been leaning more towards the wider one, good luck to you too!
