Building for Fawning

Hi does anybody fawn in stalls like inside a barn? Im wondering if it works cuz I am TIRED of mud, rain, slop and cold weather! Thanks for any and all feed back JIM SIMONSON

How big do you think the stalls need to be and how long can they be inside?

I wouldn't feel good having a doe in a small box stall with fawns, I always wanted to make separate fawning pens/runs, 25 by 50 and a stall into a barn for shelter

I have fawned in my barn multiple years with great success. I wouldn't even consider letting my does fawn outside in the cold, rain and mud if I have a barn to put them in. Management and pen design are key. Just my opinion.

how big are your stalls and do you have any thing where they can go outside or are they always inside? Thanks for you input

I built a frame huts with 5/8” 4x8 sheets of plywood, 2 sheets on each side of the fence so you have wind and rain protection in each pen, fence in the middle, 16’ long on each side. I just used long screws and drilled em together. Quick fix and has saved a buncha little guys. Bed em down good with CLEAN hay. They love em when it’s cold and windy and also shade when the sun is hot. Granted, if they are born out in the cold rain, it’s tough to get em up and moving and even if you pull em to bottle feed, they usually aren’t even strong enough to get any colostrum. good luck

Most of my stalls are 5×8 and inside the whole time. I actually put 2 does in each stall and when one has fawns I move the other doe out. I monitor them very closely and have had a lot of success doing it this way.

I cant really tell about a deer exiting the chute in your diagram. I have mine so the deer have a straight shot coming out of the chute. i saw one guy that had his exiting into a wall and he had a matress on the wall so the deer would bounce off and not break their necks. To me that was a terrible set up.

I dont always want the deer to leave the barn after they come out of the chute Not sure how I should have that Thanks for you input JIM
