I have seen several nice clear photos on this thing and I was wandering what camera are you all using. Some appear to have nice telephoto optics as well as the crisp sharp image. I appriciate your feedback.

I am using the Canon Rebel xsi. Best camera and easy to use. Worth the money!

I just bought the Cannon Rebel Xs , a step down from yours. I was wondering if you have bought any extra lenses for it and if you have any recommendations for a mid range zoom lens.

Dave , I bought a 73-300 tamron lense and a 28-85 tamron lense for it. I never use the 28-85 but the 75-300 is a must. That is all i use no filters or anything like that is you have seen the pictures of Blue Mountain Whitetail's deer...Good Luck!

will that lense be go good lense for distant photos? and can you then zoom in on the computer program and keep it clear and sharp

Yes and yes! There should be a CD that has a program caled zoom browser on it. That will allow you to do whatever you need with the photo.

Ok thanks, I will check out the tamron 75-300 lens. I haven't seen the pics. of the Blue Mountain Whitetails deer but I will try to find them to see what you are talking about.

Thanks Again...Dave

How far can you get a good picture with this camera and 73-300 lense? I found a kit with it all for around $850 but was hoping to find something a little cheaper...if anyone knows how far you can shoot with this let me know.

We use a Nikon D-40 with a 55mm-300mm zoom lens. This is great. You just leave it in auto focus and go. It takes poster size photos so we have to shrink them to around 30% to fit them on the web. But when you e-mail someone a picture they can zoom in on a single point on the rack and it wont be blurry. I know that we got ours off of a nikon web site that sells refurbished cameras and lenses. They come with a waranty and packaged like new for way less money. I'm pretty sure we paid like 350.00 for the camera which came with a 18-55 lens, which the camera new is like 500.00, and the 18-55 lens is around 250.00 new. We paid around 300.00 for the 55-300 lens which is normally around 600.00. Refurbished is the way to go. We have had ours for over a year now and haven't had any issues with it yet.

I also love the Cannon Rebel I bought and I got the 70-300mm lens. At first I bought what they call the kit lens, it was the 75-300 lens and I wasn't happy with the quality of pics so I tried the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens and it really complemented the camera well. I felt like I had a nice lens to go with a nice camera. The kit lens is about 200.00 VS 600.00 for the 70-300mm. but it was night and day difference for me. Here is a pic. of this lens and a link if you want to check it out.

Thanks for all the information. Weber, those are AWESOME pictures! Can you guesitmate about how far you were from the deer when you shot these? The longest shot I could possibly have at my place is about 80 yards, but not likely that I would have to be that far away to snap most shots. I'm going to have to get one of these cameras before July when I get camera happy!

Anyone going to NADEFA there is a photography session by John Erickson who spent some time at our farm and others last summer and fall. John knows his stuff and takes some great pictures

you should do fine at that distance, corn and apples work super in tall grass to hold the deer where you want them

I use a Canon sx10IS at the time it was the strongest point and shoot you could get but now they have a SX20IS(12 meg. pixel)also they both have 20x zoom.they run about 400.

I also have the canon xsi and i love it. I also have an extra lens that is a 75-300. You have to have that size if you want to get close pics when they are far away. It takes great pictures. I would spend the money on a better camera instead of a cheaper one. Gotta have great pics.

I agree with mv, remember when it comes to cameras you get what you pay for. I would also go with a canon, or other name brand lens. Make sure the lense has auto focus and image stabilization. The more you zoom, the harder it is to keep the camera still and the more light you lose. I would also bet a tripod for it.

As you zoom in on your picture to bring the deer closer every little imperfection and focus points will be magnified.

I use a Canon Rebel XTI with Canon lenses (mostly 70mm-300mm) and have had good luck with it. This camera has a little different aspect ratio in the body of it, so the 70-300mm lense becomes a 400mm lense bringing your deer even closer with out the extra cost of the bigger lense. It's easy to learn the basic stuff, and as you get better with it you can switch the lense to manual focus. Good Luck
