My sisters buck is going to be hard for a lot of people to beat. Shot it in the wild (southern Michigan) opening day around noon. Scored 183 3/8. Over 160 on the mainframe with 42 inches of mass. Im officially jealous of my sister. LOL

Any links that show how someone could get the semen from a nice buck after it has died.

Rla, very nice buck!! I see it was a bowkill too. Congrats!! Did you shoot him in Illinois ?

Why not, I like the typicals ,he was heavy.and he wouldn't be a cousin twice removed ,from everyone else's deer. good diet and letting them get some age is most of it. expensive straws do not always give you what you like the best. granted if I saw a big buck with a couple of crooked sticks every witch way I wouldn't turn it down .but if it was standing next to a huge typical ,I think I would go for the typical. It just looks more like a deer is supposed to look like. I think.

Or you can shave 10 years off your project and breed to something like this

Todd is there any pics of pretty boy Floyd sons? I was just wondering because I haven't seen any. He is one of my favorite deer. Just wondering what he produces

Richie good question. Todd that almost sounds like a guarantee .

also like I said I am new to this and do not have the money for expensive straws.

are you sure if I started with my plan ,that it wouldn't work.

To be 100% honest, I am sure it wouldnt work breeding to wild deer. Look at it this way. Say you shoot a noce 150 inch typical. I too live in Michigan and would guess that this will take you a lifetime to achieve. How much money is it going to cost you to collect post mortem semen off that buck? As most people know, then you are going to have to laproscopic AI to the post mortem semen to get decent conceptions. So, you have the cost of collection, lets say $1000. Lap AI to lets say 10 does. Add another $2000. When your fawns are born, you end up with a pen full of doe fawns that most people wouldnt even pay meat prices for. You will however get buck fawns that you can grow out and sell.

You will more than likely be raising top end 150 inch deer assuming you collected a 150 inch buck from the wild. for him to get that big, he was more than likely 3-4 years old in the wild in Michigan. So, what you are shooting for is something like him, a 150 inch 2-4 year old. Feed for each of them will run you $300 to $400 per year. The going price in Michigan for a 150 inch buck is about $1500. Is there any profit left.

If you want to cut corners and AI, it is my opinion that this is NOT the way to go. You can buy semen out of nice big bucks for cheaper than you can collect post mortem semen yourself. AND you will get WAY better results. Give me a call sometime and I can talk you through it completely. I am willing to help you in any way I can.

Just to keep the conversation going, I thought that the feed had a lot to do with the antlers getting big. This I have heard many times.

You can feed them all you want but if you dont have the genetics to start with you will just end up with a fat 4 year old 6 point.Real good genetics are cheap enough to get right now and you will never find anything like that in the wild!!!!

30/30 was from the wild. So it is possible to get good genes from the wild but I do fully agree good genes are cheap right now so why take the chance.

I would agree that with semen as cheap as it is now, it is the way to go. Just get a proven buck. Any pics of pretty boy sons? You won't find a better looking typical in the world

from deer-forums .com under big buck

"That's MF, a texas buck, semen sells for $7,000 or better a straw yet there really havent been a lot of great sons of his shown up..."...

There are no real guarantees
