Scours in fawn just off mother

I pulled a fawn about 9pm last off mama and this morning noticed in the pen stains all over the pad. I lifted her out to change pad and was wiping her butt and noticed that she has extremely runny-watery poop coming out.

What would cause such runny poop....she was just shy of 24 hours when I pulled her.

What should I do to treat?

One problem is that she is not started on bottle yet....so any type of oral (through the bottle) meds are out of the question right now.

Yeah....just don't know how a fawn 1 day old would have such runs. I am going to try for the first time at noon to feed her. Hopefully, she's an easy starter and I can get my gelling stuff into her right away if it persists.

Please feel free to give more advice if anyone has any!!

Does have been wormed couple of time already before fawning.....and fawns do get .25cc of Dectomax at birth.

Good thought though....will keep in mind and hope if it is worms, it will clear up with the vaccination given at birth.

Hey Susan,

I am sorry to hear of your problems with this fawn. As someone metioned, it could be worms. About 1/2cc ivermectin should take care of that.

I am not sure what else could cause that problem. Was the scours black and runny or yellow and mucousy? Could possibly be e-coli or coccidiosis. I would get a sample to the vet ASAP.

I would start her on probiotics and/or canned pumpkin. Teramycin (spelling?) tablets could also be a big help. You are welcome to call me if you need. I was going to call you instead of writing, but I seem to have misplaced your number. My cell is 304-288-4090

I did want to share of picture of the piebald doe that I had offered to you earlier. I had a couple offeres on her but, I ended up keeping her and she is awesome. With her pedigree and her markings, she is truly a one of a kind. I will probably breed her to my white RCM Noble son (Zeus) next year. That could make something really awesome

Of course that is Patch, her dad, standing beside her. He is bigger and heavier than he ever has been before this year. We have named her STAR.

Keep us posted as to what the problem is with this fawn and how to treat it. God Bless You !!

She is awesome looking.....now I'm really bummed. Randy knew that I wanted her bad, but the timing (and money) is all off this year. Patch looks really good this year. He really is a nice looking buck. Loved the picture of you and him...haven't had time to comment on that one.

The scours are lime green because of the target probiotic past we give at birth and 12 hours later. So I really couldn't give an accurate description of the color. I would say yellow if anything.

Would e-coli or coccidiosis show up so early? The does are in a new pen as of last fall.....virgin ground. It's all prairie/native grass that hasn't been grazed for years and years.

I should mention also that she is a triplet.....triplet doe fawns (live bred). Third set this year. Randy about had a heart attack over it cuz we had 6 doe fawns and 1 buck fawn in the last 24 hours. The aren't small....actually they are huge for triplets. Smallest one being about 6-6 1/2 lbs. She is not the smallest one though.

We actually thought that another doe had a single on us....but watched the pen all day and the doe that we knew had fawns was taking care of all 3 of them

did you follow up with a probiotic after ? i had one scouring,on goat milk. was gassed up,stinky runny, i feed colustrum again and then weakened it in milk couple days, all is good now,Dc Ps gotta feeling probiotics might help.after worming,Dc

DC-

I have not fed her yet as I just pulled about 9pm last night....but when I try at noon here will definitely put some probiotics in the bottle. Thanks for the suggestion.

To be honest, I am a little stumped. Mostly because it has showed up so early. I would still suggest getting a sample to the vet and have them test it.

I would still resume regular feeding schedule and continue some sort of treatment for the scours. Possibly a weaker concentration of formula. Milk can be irritating to scours. Sometime diluting it with a couple extra ounces of water is helpful. 2 cc's of plain penacillin injected sub-q may not hurt. Keep the probiotics, teramycin, pepto bismol or whatever else you use, keep those in her.

Good Luck

If things don't work out this year with a piebald fawn, then maybe next year. Most of our does will be bred by Zeus, our white RCM Noble son. We may have lots of piebald and white fawns next year. He will be bred to 2 RCM Apache does, a RCM Noble granddaughter, J-44 granddaughter, and Mortons sister named Fiesty. Fiesty comes from Bullwinkle bloodline (Morton was our big white bucks pictured in our avatar. He was 168@3 with a 25" inside spread.

This early on I would suggest electrolyte gel after you get her started on the bottle if she is still watery. Pumpkin and yogurt work well too after she has had electrolytes. I see you are using the Target probiotics. It probably wouldn't hurt to be giving it daily just while she is getting started on the bottle and scouring. I image you already are using dirt fresh daily. I have seen young fawns do this before right off of mom, my guess was stress. If it continued to long a fecal test would deffineately be in order. How is she acting? Just my .02 to add to the great advice above already given. Let us know how she is doing and good luck.

Susan - you have fawn paste - give her the probiotics that way, don't wait for her to take a bottle.

Susan, sometimes these little guys get the scours FROM that new fawn paste, if that's the case shouldn't be to much of concern! Usually you can smell it, smells just like the fawn paste. Full of fat and energy has to go somewhere. Think if you ate a bunch of, say hog fat what would your stool look like! 1/2 tube of that stuff will fill their belly if mamma has already done her job, she was already full when you gave the paste. Just saying don't start bombarding her with drugs so fast get the facts before going forward. Prior post all good just don't hit her in the head with the whole box just yet! Just one old "FADING" mans opinion! ZZ

Will keep that in mind.....just can't believe that she would have "scours" at such an early age and being on the doe. Good mother too.....ran around all day and made sure that all were taken care of.

She seems fine otherwise....tried at noon to feed her and her sister, but too soon. Refused nipple....story of my life this year (HA!). Will wait til around 6pm to try again and just let them lay with the other ones right now.

Kind of crowded in the house again....7 fawns right now. 8 out in the fawn pen. But the spoiled one (Peanut) is in his "crib" (laundry basket). He has the special spot by Mom every night. Little spoiled brat is what Randy calls him. Has to be by me constantly when he's up and around. He has to be about 5-5 1/2 lbs right now (2 weeks old tomorrow)....pretty good considering he about died the day after he was born and was 3 lbs.

Will keep a close eye on her and update her condition when I know more.

Susan, get a fecal sample to your vet asap. I had twin doe fawns that had ecoli straight off of mom. I used the fawn paste on both at birth. When we treated them 1 was given a tube of paste(full tube) once a day the other was given Excenel(3/10ths cc first day 2/10ths for 3 more days). The results were the SAME. I am a believer in both now. Good luck

Susan just had this same problem with two fawns i just pulled a few days ago.......they had the scours really bad......I treated them with 5cc's each orally of albon for 5 days....this seems to have turned them right around.....they are doing great now!!
