After I decided that horses were a never ending losing battle, I have a couple of these shelters left. If I put a feeder inside these, will deer go inside to feed or are they to confined. I would like to use these if at all possible. Any suggestions?

if you have wild tempered deer, they will go int only to eat and get out quickly, as they would feel confined, but if you have a bottlefed they may go in there and hang out for hours. either way if you put the feed in there, they will definately go in.

If you could I would take a couple pieces of tin off on the back side at least half way up. I have seen them on a windy day get spooked while in our shed similar to yours and about trample each other trying to get out. I would hate for them to have been in velvet. It wouldn't have been pretty. Rick

Any ideas on keeping birds out? Will putting a owl decoy inside startle the deer going in to feed? Thanks for the input.

Anything new can startle deer at first, but if it remains a constant they will get used to it.

Might be a good idea to place your feeders ''just'' inside at first. and ultimately place them in a fashion to avoid what Rick mentioned. Deer are certainly more at ease at entering an open carport type shed then they are one with one entrance, unless they are introduced to a closed shed either when they were young or by other deer that were. I have deer that go into 2 of my closed sheds that have nothing bigger than a normal doorway for the only opening. I don't feed in them, but they go in them to get away from the flies, and never enter them in the winter no matter how severe the weather conditions are. Thats how much they don't care for them. But yes, as all have told you, your deer will go in, some quicker than others.

The owl will work for a short period of time but then the birds figure it out. It is very difficult to keep them out of a trough feeder and keep it clean. We have phased out this type of feeder in favor of Outback Feeders. They have a tube delivery system so the feed is clean and the bucks aren't bumping their antlers when they feed. Realize this costs more money, but might be something to consider down the road.
