Does anyone feed peanuts to their deer for a sweet snack. If so, are you feeding raw or roasted peanuts?

Raw Shells and all!!! Will make your deer like bottle fed. They are a bit expensive, but well worth the money. i can get every deer on my place within 20 feet of me. i feed them every time I go down to check on them.

What are some other good cheep treats. Mine will not eat peanuts, marshmellos, bread.

They do like apples, carots, watermelons, pumpkins, squash.

Pin Oak Farms has all but stopped bottle feeding because they feed Peanuts.

They have yearling bucks raised by their mother that they can hand feed. I have 11 doe fawns at my place now not bottle feed that come running when I drive the Ranger up to get peanuts. They work and are great.

We buy them whole uncooked and in 50lbs. bags. The bag say not to eat them but I think my sons eat about a half a gallon when they go with me to feed. ;)

A friend of mine said his deer love frosted mini-wheats. He gets the jumbo sized bags at walmart.

Deer are generally slow to take to something new, even things they will come to love. So if your deer are rejecting peanuts/bread, I would suggest extending the introduction time by top dressing them daily or by just leaving portions of them in the pen in a separate dish should you not be able to top dress.

Whatever one is feeding for treats, don't forget to be conscious about the negative affect it could have by throwing them on the ground - by having ''things'' stick to them prior to ingestion by the deer.

Just sayin...

I think you can make almost all deer semi tame with snacks or peanuts. What I do is pull up on my mule and to start with they generally run away. I sit right there until they stop and turn to watch me. Then I throw a bunch of peanuts. Keep doing this every day and the bold ones and the greedy ones will get tame first as they will come for them first. The rest wont get any peanuts so they will be the next ones to get bold and greedy. Before you know it the whole pen will be 10-20 footers.

We have been using raw peanuts as treats for several years. It is a good way to get the bucks close to the truck so I can keep an eye on them during that antler infection time. We even did a segment on one of our TV shows recently about peanuts - saying it was the secret to getting deer close. We don't attempt to hand feed.

Even if you think they don't like them, like MArk said, leave them in the pen and they will be gone the next day. They just have to realize they are something good and get used to them. Once they try them they will be hooked.

Why the raw peanuts. I feed unsalted cooked peanuts and they chase me around the pens looking for more. Hope the cooked nuts aren't bad for them!

dobblin delight horse treats [apple and oats flavor] most farm stores carry these

I would think the cooked ones would cost more then the raw.
