I thought this would be an interesting subject. I love big frames and width!! I guess who doesn't right ? I have a hunting preserve and this is what my hunters ask for more than anything, so I have built my breeding program around exactly that. I am looking to cross my line I have been working on for several years now.

Question is what line out there is producing the frame and width more consistently than anyone else? There are a lot of wide deer out there to breed to but are they producing wide offspring? Have they been wide all their life or just come out of nowhere? Is the width in their family or are they a 7 foot person out of a 5 foot family? I think width is the hardest thing to breed for as far as predictability. I hope to get some responses from the texas boys because they have been breeding for frames a lot longer than we have in the north. Name the blood line and maybe a buck. Maybe show some sons if you have any pics

Should be a fun thread to read

Kurt

Rod and Dianne Miller's Hawkeye.......he had it all....and unfortunately I said had it all because they lost him last year.........when I held his skull and antlers in my hands it was Unbelievable........I can promise you he was exactly what your hunters are asking for and a whole lot more.....I am not sure if he is even selling any semen out of him anymore...but if he is I would snatch it up.........

Kurt I know I don't have to tell you this but Barkley Young has a good bit of it. That's why one of my foundation does is from him, a Hoss/Wildman girl. Pretty excited about some Jailbird and Texas Tea offspring I've gotten out of her for sure!

My line I have been working on is all Barkley young crossed with sundowner and BW sunny ... Most my does have average spreads over 25 inches and at least 5 generations of spreads over 25 inches. They are all line bred for predictability.

I like GD Romeo for width

Dices Romeo is for sure putting width on his offspring but other lines are also Cole and Barkley Young have a SOLID program as you well know. Mike and Texas T will no doubt be a force in the future as well and Bossman will no doubt prove he will get it done from the line they come from. Maxbo Ranger has proven his genes can roduce consistant frame and width, Going back to bucks like Peacock,Charlie and Cardinal are all a proven line to mix into a herd for predictable, inheritable, production.

Some other hidden treasures:

Henry Fry's buck Moose has a solid track record for Henry

John Miller and Little Bear is a line on the rise

Howard Miller and bucks like Domino,Dane and Hugo

But hey WHO pays any attention to deserts like these when most are not listed in the "Flavor of the Month" and don't break the bank with advertising ................But cash in on the "REAL" Market;)

I know I don't!:D

Very good response Wayne!!! Very informative and very good advise !! I have always liked the Dane line and love some young blood!!!!

Thanks bud

Lots of good responses. But if you want to talk about bloodlines that have produced width consistently for years then the "buck" stops at Barkley Young's farm. The best part is that he did it all with basically a closed herd (much like Flees') for years. He simply line-bred the best with the best on his farm and it's turned into an incredible amount of consistent, predictable pass down in the offspring.

3 year old Brazos son, most of our width all goes back to the Paco line (south texas)

I love width but it seems so hard to get the inches to throw out a score to pay the bills. I believe i bred with most wide bucks that are out there last year except for abilen the texas buck. I will be useing him this year and i will use a little stretch this year. Old school yes but i am going after the hunters, not the auctions.

i agree you should go after the hunters market! but all the preserve owners I talk to tell me hunters want width! so the best is breed wide typicals with wide power bucks like maxbo XL, powerball, timberjack.king kong, free agent, big sir.

you get my point, stay away from them tight trashy bucks!!!!! the wide bucks with nice frames and extras are money makers! And if you want any good money from the sale of doe fawns you need to use good mainstream bucks! Good luck!!

Thats just it. If you use those high dollar bucks being a small farm you will see no return on your investment. A guy does not need to spend 5 grand plus on a straw to make stockers. There are great sons of those bucks and then there a bucks that have better production with no name compared to the bucks you listed. Every buck you listed minus one maybe is an auction buck..Not a stocker buck. Thanks i will stick to the money makers. Not the hype!!

I see your point but Ive heard you say that you can have only so many deer in new york???? Right??? Does out of no name bucks will bring no money! If you breed smart with good anchors you will be fine!! Id rather sell one 300 inch shooter then Three 190 or 2oo inchers! This is a expensive hobby for me! LoL so if this is your livelyhood I can see how you may take a different approach, I was caught up in the hype or as I say the bull%&^$ the first year or two but now I breed a couple good does with strong anchors like R16 to marketable producing bucks, so we will see mike , time will tell!

Oh i agree with ya but you did not read where i am not looking to sell does. No name even with top deer will bring you nothing. Been there, done that. You also have to be real. How many 300 inch bucks do you see yourself raising???? 2oo inch 2 year olds out the door 10 to 15 sold a year. Who is payin the bills. Small herd means small bills. With todays does it is pretty easy to make 200 in 2yr olds with very low priced semen. I believe i have some top breedings that have proven themselves. Do i have some of the hype breedings..Nope. Dont need to pay 10 grand for a hype named doe that i can make as big,if not bigger bucks with than a doe i payed 2 grand for. If i had a dollar for the times i have had some very big named successful deer farmers tell me they payed x amount of dollars for a hyped up doe that did not put out what their no named does were doing or how many say i now own al these top named does and i would give my left leg for my old genetics back!!!

I told you Im a hobby farmer! I dont want to raise 15 shooters a year! And I am realistic when I say I will raise 300inch shooters with my genetics! The does I have now have 3oo inch womb brothers and mothers are proven! As a matter of fact I paid MUCHLESS!!! then the deer I bought when I started with much better pedigrees and production! no where near 10,000 ! so it can be done! I feel you have been taken over on some of your deer? Well join the crowd!!! MANY of of us have, you just learn from your mistakes and do what works for you! Im not knocking your methods just telling you hunters want WIDE deer is all! thats what this thread is all about! And I still would like to know what you do with all them does?? LOL Good Luck!!!!

Neeby, I would like to know what ALOT of farms do with thier does? Thier aren't enough auctions or new buyers to buy ALL the doe fawns raised this year alone!lol:confused:

But lets not HYJACK..................Kurts thread! Sorry Kurt:)

Ok If you dont think your does fawns are good enough to sell or put in auction then why not buy sexed semen!! just a thought? Dont you own rawhide?? he looks like a nice buck! If he produces, has a good pedigree and you dont over sell him then you should be able to move his fawns, right?? I would think! Anyone that knows me knows I love wide deer! And if they have extras great!!! Mike likes to give his opinions on these forums very often , so why cant I give him my honest opinon! hunters want width! bottom line! Thank you kurt for starting this thread about WIDTH!! Lets move on! Good Lord!!!!

That just what they are..opinions. Read and move on or make a comment. I dont have a clue where you think i was taken on any of my deer. As you can see. My turn around has already been made. I bred with nothing but 28 to 41 inch bucks last fall so i think i kinda have an idea of what hunters want. Did i pay high dollar for semen? Not one straw over $400. Dont you think i can pay the bills when i make 200in deer at two and breed my own deer?? All i can say is if not just sit back and look at the pictures!!!
