Why is the state and federal government so hell bent on the subject of CWD (chronic wasting disease), when EHD (epizootic hemorrhagic disease) kills more deer in the United States than CWD ever will? I as a deer farmer in the state of Pennsylvania have lost numerous deer, mainly bucks, to this disease when it came about in 2002 in the region along with several other deer farmers in the local area. This year we have lost more than we have in past years, and will continue to lose them until a frost or freeze comes along. I have heard from other deer farmers about a gentleman in the state of Missouri who has lost 100+. I have also heard, a gentleman in the state of Ohio has lost his entire herd. We have done everything we can think of; spraying the fields and animals with some of the most popular agricultural pesticides (permethrin, imidan, etc.) with very little success. On the first signs of any type of symptoms, we have darted our deer with micotil and we have managed to save a few.

The excuse they are using is the midge causing the disease has blown up from the south, where it is very prominent, from storms. We live four miles from interstate 70, and in my opinion along with local deer farmers living even closer to interstate 70 believe this disease is being introduced by trucking activity out of the south hauling produce and other goods into this area.

As a life and founding member of the Pennsylvania Deer Farmers Association, I feel it is time for our Federal and State governments to start addressing EHD which is the most prevailing issue in whitetail deer across the United States instead of focusing on CWD which is only a fraction of the problem.

Can anyone tell me where I need to look (website) to see the federal CWD rule that addresses killing 2 animals on your farm to offset a non-conclusive CWD test?

Mick you are SO RIGHT with your Post above.......it is unreal to me the money and time wasted on the CWD opposed to EHD......things have got to CHANGE! maybe we get Ryan in office (him being a hunter) we can turn things around......

The FACT that CWD has been around 45 freaking years and ALL the agencies that be .....................KNOW NOT ONE DAMN THING MORE ABOUT CWD now than they did 45 years ago.........Than they do about BIGFOOT!........................Were is a politician that is looking to find federal and state monies to fill thier coffers...............Not grow a pair and CUT the Federal CWD funding out and put that money to use finding a SOLUTION to EHD........THE REAL PROBLEM!!!!!!!

I got one better for you than that guys.

I know there are vaccinations out there for EHD, but you first need to know the strain to vaccinate against. BUT, here in West Virginia it is ILLEGAL for us to vaccinate against EHD. Our wanderful, all-knowing DNR has made laws against us trying to protect our deer against EHD. The reason they use is that the vaccines also protect against a variety of strains of EHD and bluetounge. The WVDNR is afraid the vaccine will cause an outbreak of bluetounge or different strains of EHD along with whatever strain is currently in epidemic proportions.

Yeah Jack the worst part is they have nothing to back up their claims because Nobody has a clue regarding EHD because they put no effort towards learning about the disease.....it's sickening......what these farmers are going through that have the EHD and the surrounding wild deer as well is simply awful......Something has got to be done....simply doing nothing is an in justice to the animals!

Yes Pa has EHD ....and Northern Ohio.....one farm in Northern Ohio lost a Bunch of their popular Breeders.....I will not say their name out of respect to them.....if they want to make it public knowledge it is their decision not mine......very sad none the less........Mick the one who started this thread is experiencing EHD and he is in New Stanton PA........my heart goes out to all those that are dealing with this .....

This is a reply to Four Seasons Whitetails: As posted in the original post, yes, there is EHD in PA. I've also attached a picture of a 3 yr old, 200+, dead, dead buck out of one of my bachelor pens that died yesterday. As you can see, foaming of the mouth, this is one sign that a buck will have when he suffers dramatically, and finally dies from EHD. I noticed this buck at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning at my regular feeding time. He had separated himself from the other bucks and by 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, he was dead. Until you experience this for yourself, as many people have and will continue to have this sunken feeling, to find one of your prize bucks laying dead, you won't know what the feeling is. Yes, there is EHD in PA.

And, thank you Dennis of D&D Whitetails, for the sympathy you have shown to me and many others across the US that are still continuing to lose deer to EHD.
