I was wondering if anyone has ever used Iodine to treat a joint infection in a deer. I have a young doe that got an infection in the joint right above the hoof. We had the vet treat it once and then we have lanced it 2 other times and have been using penicillin to flush it out. We have been treating her with antibiotics but the swelling has not gone down. She is putting very minimal weight on it and has a little limp. I spoke with the vet the other day and she said that joint infections are really hard to clear up in deer and recommended using Iodine to take care of it. She said it will cause a lasting effects of the joint becoming stiff but will definitely clear up the infection. I am just curious if anyone has ever did this and how long the joint stayed swelled afterwards? Thanks,

Kevin

Iodine by mouth? If that is what you are talking about it will probally clear it up. Its a pretty tough on the animal. The Iodine treatment will push the animal to near toxicity. To get the iodine levels high enough it pushes the animal close to death. If i have this in a doe i will just take one toe off. They don't need both of them.. Make sure if your vet does it they take it off in the second joint from the tip of the hoof. I have did this surgery on a dozen or more animals and have cured every one of them. I hate to do it on bucks cause some times your get a little lop sided antler growth the following year.

I guess I will need to call my vet because I thought she meant to lance the wound and flush it out with iodine like we had done with the penicillin. I know she said the joint will become immobile and stiff afterwards but it would take the pain away. Thanks for the response its worth me checking into it, her hoof is really starting to grow out on that injured leg.

The iodine powder is an old school treatment. Had a old country vet tell me how to do it. It's just pretty rough on the deer. I would take the toe off without a doubt. In two weeks you will never know she has one toe. She will walk on it and everything.

we had 2 buck fawns this fall get abscesses above the hoof. Drained them gave them fusoguard, antibiotics, flushed the wound with iodine and packed them with furacin. one was much worse than the other it was into the joint. I wondered if I was going to have to amputate the claw. I had to knock him out twice.I bandaged it the first time because we were supposed to get a lot rain. Drained it, flushed and packed. Knocked him out two weeks later and took bandage off. Wound was clean and no drainage but I could see in the joint. He had another abscess about 3-4inches above the first that did not communicate with the first. I drained, flushed and packed it with furacin. I left it unbandaged, sprayed the original area with silverspray and gave more antibiotics and he did great. The other one had a draining hole above the hoof and healed up fine after one treatment.

Here is a picture I took a few days ago. It is looking a lot better then it did a month ago but still swollen and she isn't putting much weight on it. How long would you wait to use the iodine? How long does it usually take for the swelling to go down when the infection is gone. I hate to use the iodine when its looking better but at the same time I would hate to wait to long and the infection gets worst. Its been 3 weeks since we flushed it the last time. Thanks for the help and your replies.

It's not looking bad at all. I would stay on her with antibiotic and see what happens. What have you been giving and how often ?

Its been around 3 weeks ago we gave her penicillin, draxxin and i believe LA300. I am going to try to hit her again this weekend. I was able to hold her leg today while feeding her treats and I don't think I will need to lance it again, I applied some light pressure to her and it didn't bother her. She still has a limp though.
