I bought a straw of a mellanistic deer today. I have always wanted a mellanistic. The semen was collected by Dr Shipley and I can't wait to breed with it. If I can breed two does successfully with the straw, what are the chances of getting a mellanistic fawn? Also do the odds go up if you breed the offspring to each other?

I was contacted by email from someone a while back saying they had melanistic semen however I didn't know them and wasn't sure I would be getting that kind of semen so I opted not to buy it. If I knew for sure I could buy true melanistic semen I would buy a couple of straws also.

Roger, Check out the semen under the Vendors Page they have a few straws.

I was the one that sold the semen today I wish the guys luck with it I gave a few guys chances a few months ago no nobody was interested. I guess they thought I was a bullshitter:confused:, I hope to get another deer before winter and have a live deer to collect from. I will have a feature story in Texas Trophy Hunters in a few months showing the deer I harvested. There are thousands of straws for sale but none have the mellanistic trait attached to them so the two guys that bought from me today where pretty lucky!!!!!!!!! :)

I was one of the guys that was contacted about the straws of melanistic semen. The reason I chose to pass was the semen was collected post mortem. And actually, I didn't pass I just chose not to pay the asking price. Apparently I wasn't the only one that felt the same way. Anyways, I also was the one who suggested contacting Dr Shipley to do the post mortem collection. By the way, whats the selling price on the semen?

I hope things work out for everyone.

The question is still "What are the odds of the offspring being mellanistic when breeding a regular doe to a mellanistic and do the odds get better if you line breed the offspring to each other?

You folks should have watched Wild Rivers Whitetails TV, we did a whole segment on color phases of deer and the odds of different characteristics appearing. You have to understand genetics and dominant vs recessive traits.

I saw that show and I drew that box several times with different colors of deer. I know someone had a brown buck breed a white doe and she had 2 white fawns. Now when I used the genetic box that wasnt supposed to happen. It should have been 1 white and 1 brown. Eldon

It's all about the dominant gene........it not as easy as one would think.......I wouldn't know where to begin.......but the one who figures it out first will be sitting on a gold mine.......lol

Brett,

To answer your question melanistic is a recessive gene. So you will get no black deer the first cross. The brown doe fawns produced will have to be bred back to a brother or you will have to get another straw from a melanistic and breed back to these first cross does. At that time you will get some black fawns. It would up your chances to get a pure melanistic to breed back to the first generation cross.

I did not buy it to put on the whitetail exchange! It will be used to breed with and I also have a chance to get another straw of mellanistic from a different deer to breed the offspring to. We shall see!

As far as what it is worth, I know exactly what is was worth to me and that is all that matters to me.

I fully agree Brett !!!! If YOU have a plan and a purpose and know what direction YOU ARE headed............YOU are farther along than most!!! have a PLAN and stick to it!

Keep us updated I think it would be AWESOME to produce deer like that!:)

Brett,

If you get some black deer trust me at straw you bought will be priceless! Good luck hope it works for you!
