Jamie, Best of luck on em................Be patient and try working with them, we have had to splint one before. Weren't quite that bad.

Hope it works its self out.................Keep us posted

i have been working them , i dont think its bone , i can move them into position . they just turn back. he can stand but real wobbly . im trying to come up with a splint .

I would try to splint them I have used popsicle sticks and elastic tape. Make sure they do not get sores I usually put cotton around the legs first then the splints JIM

well this little guy can stand , walk about three wobbly feet before tumbling . no change in the feet really though. put some splints on him today. think he may also have another problem . his neck is crooked ...... he never raise's his head . he can turn left and right but his head is always down .....??? i can slowly pull it .

he was a twin , his sister was fine doing good . the momma did clean him up , but that was it. he could not stand at all to nurse just layed there and cry'd. i tubed him with clostrum first off then on the bottle for about 24 hours. now he is taking straight red cap just fine.

anyone know what cause's this to happen anyway? other than my luck :)

What happens is sometimes they get twisted up in the womb. I would be very aggressive in your splinting efforts, rub and bend those legs till they almost break. The older they get the more they want to stay in the same position. Be sure to wrap them in a manner which they continue to have blood flow to the lower sections of the hooves.

Bo-se can never hurt. I typically use 3/4-1 inch PVC cut in half the long way. Take a grinder and smooth the edges out.

Splint for 2-3 days remove give the legs about 12-24 hours to air out and repeat the process.

As for the neck, again rub and bend that sucker just like the bone-crackers do on people. Good Luck it can be challenging.

I've seen this resolve by simple therapy with the hoof and legs and on its own with no intervention. In this case, since the fawn was unable to eat, you had to take action so perhaps a regimen of therapy will do the trick. Of course you should consult your vet just in case there is something else going on.

Josh, do you have any photos of what your splint looks like when placed on the fawn? Do you put anything between the PVC and the leg?

Thanks!

I do not have any pictures. I just use rolls of gauze, and gauze pads. I wrap the whole legs first in gauze them pad the pinch points (end of the splints with extra gauze. Then wrap with horse hoof wrap.

well the little guy WAS doing good..... his feet was starting to straighten up with the splints eating good moving around. fed him 4 oz of milk this morn (the most he ever took at one time ) went to feed him at noon today ......... dead as a hammer ????????? whos idea was it for me to be a deer farmer anyway ..........:(

Jamie, Do NOT beat yourself up over the loss of this lil guy!! That is why I asked in an earlier post.............Did the mother care for him? Did he have a sibling ?

My point was I have all to often seen a fawn "Saved" from their mother "neglecting" them .....................Only to have the same pain as you are having!

I had one EXACTLY like this guy last year Mother had buck and a doe cared for the buck cleaned him and the doe............But then I noticed she left the buck and got the doe fawn off with her and after REPEATED attempt to get him with her, She refused to have ANYTHING to do with hm!

Crooked legs and all we brought him to the house and he even drank about 2 oz on my wifes first try! Oh we CAN save him.............I built him splints,a hoist to suspend him but allow him to stand until tired then rest in his sling. 6 days we worked and watched him gain ground...................Only to find him dead on the 7th morning!

The thing WE have to realize is we try to out smart mother nature and attempt to save animals that for what ever reason are headed towards death...........No matter what!

Sorry for your loss................Been there done that!

Best of Luck

Well thanks Wayne that does make me feel better , and makes alot of sense. It is what it is when it comes to Mother Nature I guess. Anyway gotta move on and learn from experience. Thanks for the help. Maybe some time I can come to your farm for a visit , time willing ?

Sorry Jamie....I know the feeling as well......Great advice Wayne! I think being a Deer farmer we have all had that kind of experience at one time or another....hang in there Jamie you did your best! Better times ahead.....
