Since the forum is a little slow, I thought I'd see if I could get some information on rope wicks.  If you search the forum you will see it has been a past topic a couple of times but I still have some questions. My first question is do you drill the holes in the top and let the liquid wick up and then down?  Secondly, is each rope separate and lastly, do you leave the ropes long inside so they lay at the bottom and wick up the solution even when it gets low?

Last time I asked about these, there were a couple guys that had some experience with them.  If you have made these, please take some pics of the inside and provide instructions on how you made them.  Hopefully, this could help some of us with EHD and Flys.

Thanks,

John

John, I have used rope wicks for past two year. I am a huge fan. I drilled holes on top of the pipe. Each rope is seperate and I usually leave plenty in the bottom of pipe. I will try to get pics and explain how I made them later.

I have been using the cattle rubs with flypes for does and bucks. I would like to know if the rope wicks work better. The rope scares me with the bucks. When the bucks are feeling good and running or get spooked will run thru the flypes. Will the heavier and more abrasive ropes damage the velvet.

Thanks Coldspring, what type of rope did you use?  I would assume some materials wick better than others.

Here I some pictures of mine. I like the cotton rope that is intertwined and not just twisted it stays together better. I melted the end so it doesn't fray. I personally like 3" pipe. Drill holes on the top every two inches put the rope in and I let the rope hang on both sides of the pipe. Every other rope hangs on the one side. I put eye hooks on the end to hang them by. I use a t fitting  towards the one end of the pipe with a screw cap for easy access to fill it. I also get a 4" pipe and cut it in half and put the one half on top of your ropes and holes screw it tight to the 3"inch pipe. This keeps the ropes in place plus keeps water out.
