If you can touch him i would just rub some pine tar on it every few days and squirt some Advantage flee and tick around on his rack. Those 2 will keep the flies at bay. Catron works great also if you can get close to him. If not i would keep a very close eye on it as it looks like its deep enough and meaty enough for the flies to have a field day!
Keep a very close eye on it, any sign of flies know him down spray with fly spray and then pine tar. I also give antibiotics, pen, excede, etc. I am trying to put a video together at the moment on antler damage/surgeries.
I've had three different bucks break/damage at least one side this year. All of which were way worse looking than that one. They've all healed up nicely on their own, I only kept watching for flys and maggots, but never had to knock anybody down.
The early breaks and cuts seem to heal on their own. This late into the growing season flies usually go to work on them. I would try to get something on it pine tar if he is calm or fly spray if he isn't. I know guys every year that have great deer and never realize that the deer is even sick until he is down. Most of the time it is to late. If you have to dart him wait until late one evening so he has all night to recover before it gets hot the next morning. I sell a misting system that's motion activated so it only sprays the deer. The farmers that have them now just let the chemical do it's job when a buck gets damaged unlike before when having to cut off the rack or dart the deer to fix the damage and taking a chance on losing them. Electric unit is 1000. Battery operated unit with a solar charger is 1200. www.opt-to-mist.com
I am in the same boat Ed. One of my two year old broke a point just like yours 2 days ago, I think he'll he ok though because it's no longer bright red with blood and we had some rain and cool weather that helped keep the flies down.
I just got done feeding and was looking at him . He looks a lot better looks like it healed over for the most part and no flies but I will be checking him 2 or 3 times a day for the next few days for flies. Everyone thanks for the replies.
