Has anyone ever tranqualized a steer that size? What did you use. I have one that has been out for quite a while and I cant catch him.

My neighbor used my gun to dart a 400 pounder and he used a 2cc dart with just single strenght rompom. Then gave him 2cc reverser.

Im no expert but I think it is a lot less then deer. I would do 2cc 1/3 bottle at most. That may even be to strong. I just know its always way less for all the other animals. Horses and dogs go out with very little so im sure cows are the same

I darted a 2000lbs bull that got out of the sales barn with 2cc of rompom didn't put him down but calmed him down so they could get him back in. Had the cop standing by me with the rifle just in case. I know it usually didn't take very much to put them down like they said a lot less than deer.

Brett - Last year I darted a full grown angus cow and the vet had told me to use straight 100mg Xylazine at a 1cc dose. That wasn't enough. I loaded another dart and hit her again, and that was not enough. Hit her one more time and that was barely enough, but it was enough.

I'm guessing she probably weighed around 1200.

Now...this was my one and only experience in darting a cow, but I don't know why one couldn't start out with a 3cc dart filled with straight 100mg Xylazine, especially if it weighs 1800 lbs.

I might add here that this cow I put down was not worked up in any way during the process of getting her all the way down. She was calmly walking in amongst other cattle.

Good luck Brett! I would be curious to know the results of what you end up doing. From ''Deerchaser'' to Steerchaser! :)

P.S. I just proofread my post and am I EVER glad I did. The 5th word in my post ''darted'', was absent the ''r''. Whew...not good!!!!

I have darted several in the past for a vet. Used 5cc straight xylazine on something that size. I would start out with 3cc.

Brett I dart them form time to time I have darted 10 or 12 and I use 3cc 300mg xylazine on a 1200lb bull I have not lost one yet. And it puts them out where you can get them on the trailer.

I darted a 700-800 pound bull to surgically castrate him, wanted to make sure he stayed out good (for obvious reason), I used rompum mixed 6 cc to a bottle of telezol, 2 cc he was out good. reveresed with 2 cc

Also darted a 1200 pound wild tempered steer, straight, no mix. took almost 1.5 cc of 3X xylazine (or 4.5cc of the regular 100mg/ml) to put him down.

Both instances were problem free.

It took 7 cc mixed 6cc of 100 mg to a bottle of telazol. I gave him 2cc at a time. So i got plenty of practice with the dart gun. He never went out but finally went down to get a rope on him. Drug him in trailor with a tractor. He is on his way to the stock yard! Thanks for all the help.

Wow - 7cc...Talk about a wide spectrum of what has worked for/with others.

Appreciate you posting your results Brett.

Now...if you happen to be out sometime, say at your favorite Steak House, and during the process of someone eating a steak, you happen to notice their tongue begin to become long and hang out of their face, then you'll know that the stock yard didn't wait out the withdrawal time. :)

They go from here to a feeder lot where they are put on grain for about two months. They were told he had been tranqualized. I hope they have a good fence. I think it took so much because he was mad as a hornet. He never ran but would start at us and snort like a wild bull and chase us around the tractor. Next time I have one like this I will use a 30-06.
