Why would a 2 week old fawn be panting this morning? Any diagnosis on this? He was fine last night...ate good. Woke up this morning and he was panting hard. Ate fine though.

Thanks

No I haven't....I'll get that done. I'm thinking respiratory obviously. Don't know why though.

History on fawn is--he is 2 weeks old today. Smallest (4lbs 10oz) of triplets. Had to take him because his hooves weren't completely developed on the bottom in front and wouldn't get off his knees to suck on mama. Has had horrible diareha but just in last couple days got that under control. Now this. He's still small...I would guess him at 5 1/2 lbs.

Is the belly enlarged if so it is suffering from bloat and you have very little time to treat.........Does the fawn have a cough?

Do you have him inside or out? What are you feeding him and how much did he eat this morning?

He is still inside house, but outside during the day...on grass. So is able to eat dirt. Fox Valley is what I feed. He's been taking 4 oz per feeding for about 3-4 days now. Before that...with the runs....he had been getting 2 oz formula & 2 oz water per feeding to help with runs--then went to 3 oz per feeding when he started getting better.

Just trying to figure out why his temp is a little low. Could be the AC, could be a little hypoglaucemic, not sure. The panting could be related to trying to regulate his body temp. Put him outside or on a heating pad and get him back up 101.5 - 102 and see if the panting resides.

No AC on around here (have only had it on about 3 days this summer in beginning of June)....been a cool July. House is 70....outside is about 74 right now. He is in the morning sun right now since about 7:30am. Will take his temp again in a little bit.....thanks Robbie!!

Thanks Robbie......sniff:(

I have 23 healthy ones that will get me through this though.....

I know....you can't save them all. I grew up with livestock on the farm. Just tough seeing the little guy suffer. Broke my heart seeing him gasping like that at the end. Seems he's been suffering with something for his short 2 weeks of life and I did everything I could.

Sorry for your loss...

If you can you should get a necropsy done so your loss wasn't a waste...It may save you and your other deer from the same thing...And give you a small piece of mind if it happens again.

Best of luck

Sorry Susan,

Sounds like it may have been bloat but the belly really should have looked big......if it was taking short little breaths and panting though it sounds like the one I had and he died from bloat ....this is the first fawn I ever lost to this and it seems that once they get the bloat there is very little time to treat it.......I wish you the best with thr rest of your fawns.

sorry for your loss susan, we had simalar problem here on wed gave ehd booster to an 8 week old fawn wouldn't eat thurs morn thought just pulled off feed for awhile looked great thurs at noon up eating grain looked fine at evening feeding still wouldn't take bottle but was drinking water fri morn no bootle but was up walking around noticed a little bloat in belly gave her 1cc exenel,.4cc bannimine,.5cc b-12 came home around 6 pm looked alittle de-hyd tubed her with some hi-enegy electrolites about 4oz about 7pm called vet to take her in he caled me back 8pm said bring her in at 9pm went to go get her in pet porter she was dead!!!!!!!!!!! bloated up tite. this was the first time ever dealing with bloat. took her on to vet to do necropsy nothing showed up except tears! i learned that i needed a long tube on hand for this type problem to insert in to relieve this bloat and to keep a close eye on this type thing she basicly sufocated from all the fluids in her with no way to pass them till her gut got back on track i had given pro botic paste atime of shot to help with any gut problem. so susan we know the pain you feel it just makes you feel helpless!

Well....let's look at it this way about the lessons learned this summer...Year #3:

1. One had coccidia...dead buck fawn

2. One had a lump....dead buck fawn

3. One had bloat...dead buck fawn

4. One, just dead out in pen reason unknown....dead buck fawn

Our bucks seem to be the weaker sex this summer.

Thanks everyone.....I know everyone goes through what I did.

We all love our deer, especially the bottle fawns. If we didn't shed any tears for one lost, we shouldn't be in this business.
