hi~

i am new to this forum and i am desperately seeking some advice. we have a 6 week old fawn, doe...named abbie.

we have had her from 3 days old. she started with scoures immediately...and for 2 1/2 weeks we struggled trying to get her to stop. with formula, pedialite, plain yogurt and a dash of karo syrup...we were successful.

shortly after that stopped, maybe a week... we noticed her left cheek seemed swollen...then her left ear was tilted back...and then her bottom jaw also was pulling. she also appeared to gaze off...for minutes. i took her to a vet who specializes in deer. he checked her stools...normal. he said she looked to be a few days old, not weeks old. he gave her an antiobitic and some vitamin shots. we continued them over the 4th of july weekend.

she was looking good, but still not very active. she has never really drank what she should be in a day...always less. somedays, a lot less. i was syringe feeding her for days ... but needless to say, she goes out running and eating greens outside. somedays she just stands around.

took her back to the vet. he gave her a shot of steroids along with another shot of antiobiotics. he kindly told me that this was all her could really do for her. he said to pray for the best.

so her i am today. she is 6 weeks old ... still very small. her fur is not shiney and she is weak. her stools are solid. however, she eats very little. we have a bowl of dirt in her cage... fresh greens, a branch with leaves and water. i am also offering deer food in a bowl as well. i give her 5 cc's of a priobiotic in additon to her formula. however, she only takes 1 bottle ( 1o oz) and possibly half of another and then the last one hopefully all of it at night. i offer the bottle aand try to get her to take it many times through out the day, but she refuses it. i have tried different nipples as well. to no avail. i fear she is fading and i am so stressed over all of this.

can anyone offer some advice to my situation ... this is breaking my heart...more than you can imagine !!!!

thank you in advance.

kindly,

kandi

What antibiotics did the vet administer? Did he run any blood tests? Was temp high? Did she receive any vaccinations at birth? For starters I would give her C&D antitoxin, I do this at the first signs of fawns skipping feedings. That's the simple route, but would need more info to help you out further.

Did the vet give her a shot of BoSE? (Vitamin B and Selenium). Could she have a Thiamine deficiency? Have you tried giving her goat's milk instead of formula to see if she would take off on it better?

Kandi,

I'm just curious as to what kind of milk you are feeding her? And if its a formula, how are you mixing it (as in ratio) ?

Sorry you are not getting more advice but this is a tough one. I would definitely consider all of the above recommended options as any one of these could help her.

Wishing you the best...

My doe fawn really took off on goat's milk and when she had issues w/ soft stool, I would put a few teaspoons of crushed pumpkin inside of the Gerber bottle which fixed her stook immediately (within the same day). I am convinced that there is no better milk for MY deer than goat's milk. I also fed her a lot of fruit and veggies on days when I thought she lacked energy. I continue to feed her good feed topped with sweet feed each evening. She loves it and has gained tons of weight in the last few months. I also give her a vitamin B supplement on a regular basis. It seems to help her appetite. She also loves to play in the sprinkler on days when it is just so extremely hot outside.

I agree lanasvet about the goats milk. It really does work wonders, I also feed goat yogurt and fawn paste if bad scours, it worked great!!!!

abbie is STILL hanging on !!! we are taking it day by day ...

the vet gave ...

dexamethasone 2 mg/ml per ml

penicillin w/ benz per ml

physical exam

b complex per ml

thiamione 200 mg/ml

Bo-SE per ml

oxybiotic 200 mg/ml

fecal intestinal parasite exam

fecal floatation

lactobac ruminant gel

now, that was both her visitc combined...not all one visit.

i am giving her ultra 24 formula ... mixing it to the package directions. i have recently started adding cows vitamin d to it... about a third per bottle.

she is the same...but somedays are a little better than others. she is just sitting at my feet now all curled up. she walks around the house and goes to the bathroom in her cage. we take her out for an hour at a time to run or walk around and eat greens about 3 to 4 times a day.

she gets along well with my labs, corgi and retriever... and follows me around in the yard like she is one of the dogs. (we have 3.5 acres with a 20 foot wide stream running through the back of the property...although she has never gone back that far )

she is drinking more fluids now ... the last few days she has had 3 to 4 bottles !!!!!! yay !!!

i will try the goats milk...and see how that goes. hopefully it will make a difference !!!

thank you for all your advice, if you have any more, i would love to hear it !!!

You mentioned in your first post that you have a branch with leaves in with her. If by chance it is a wild cherry tree branch that is not a good choice. The leaves can become toxic as they start to die. I sure somebody can explain all of the details on why this happens. I just know broken off cherry branches are no good.

Does she have a pen outdoors with plenty of fresh dirt?? I keep my bottlefeds indoors about 2 weeks then out they go, they do better all around once outdoors, also give alittle clover , good luck!!!

Good advice/point Josh - just learned about this myself on this forum here from Rick in Illinois. I've had mysterious deaths in 2 of my 7 pens, and the common denominator in both of those pens are the fact they have black cherry trees in them. Used to think it was the standing water in those 2 pens, which I know isn't good, but it may not be the main culprit responsible for the mysterious deaths as I once thought, sounds like the Black cherry is likely to be. In my area of Illinois I like to feed branches of elm and mulberry, and they also love grapevine leaves.

hi again ~

i do have abbie in a cage in the house. we let her out several times a day.

we do have fresh dirt available for her in her cage. :)

i had given her a willow branch. we stopped the branches since we were unsure if any were poisionous.

she seems to be losing her hair now...not like falling out. but if you pick her up its all over your hands and such. :(

i am afraid to let her out in the farm yard...we have a fox that we are trying to catch. i am afraid it may take her !!!

plus with this heat wave... i think it's best to keep her in.

thank you again for ALL your help !!!! you have all been life savers !!! :)

i tried a new thing this year with a fawn that i tryed everything with. Its called ARREST. It has a thickener in it. i highly recommend it. its like a 1.50 a little bag that last about three days. Tried everything literally and this stuff is the only thing that saved him.
