American Cervid Alliance Granted USAHA Board of Directors Seat

Laurie Seale named Interim ACA Representative

San Diego- Monday, October 21, 2013, the American Cervid Alliance was unanimously approved as a full voting member and allied organization of the United State Animal Health Association's (USAHA) board of directors. The USAHA is where most of the resolutions recommending changes to the rules and regulations set forth by USDA/APHIS occur.

The motion for approval of the ACA's appointment was made by Dr Bill Brown, Animal Health Commissioner of Kansas, with Dr Dustin Oedekoven, state veterinarian of South Dakota, as the second. The motion passed unanimously by the USAHA board on Monday night. Last week, the ACA Council unanimously approved allowing the ACA's application for membership to USAHA to go forward. Moderator Eric Mohlman said, “Our alliance represents 30 separate deer and elk associations who have been actively participating and reviewing industry issues. Our council can now carry the voice representing our combined 12,000 members to USAHA.” The ACA joins three of the national cervid associations recognized as USAHA allied organizations on the board. The other organizations, within our industry, who are already members of the USAHA board of directors are the North American Elk Breeders Association, North American Deer Farmers Association, and the Exotic Wildlife Association.

Laurie Seale was selected to represent the ACA during the 2013 USAHA convention, if the ACA board seat was approved. She will vote in the board meetings during the USAHA conference this week. Seale told the council that the cervid industry is at a very critical and important time in its history and she was proud to represent our industry's alliance.

The ACA will conduct a thorough nomination and vetting process for its 2014 representative for next year’s USAHA conference in Kansas City.
