I found a fawn in my deer pen, not clue where she came from and she was almost dead. Like a wet dish rag didn't have the energy to open her eyes or lift her head. I shot her up with B complex gave her some antibiotics. and tubed her with freshly milked goats milk. within 1 hr she was standing and peeing when I rubbed her rear end. Is there anything else I can do to help this little gal along?

clean and wipe her evertime you would normally give her a bottle. For SQ fluids I have the best results with LRS-actated ringers from a vet.. Sugar/dextroase under the skin will draw fluid from the blood vessels and cause fluid to pool under the skin, if you can get 0.25%- 0.5% dextrose soln iv, it would be better, but if you need to give her sugar, give her honey at 2-3 cc by mouth 2-3 times per day to keep her blood sugar levels up.. God bless and good luck.. ps- no banamine at this time on a dehydrated fawn

Uncle Harley - Stimulate them to poop and pee every time you feed. Early on, that is what momma does, every time!!! I don't know who started this idea of only stimulating them once or twice daily but they are flat-out wrong, and I see this posted alot. This is not a matter of one's opinion, it's just wrong man. Early on momma stimulates them every time she feeds them...period! Good luck with her Uncle Harley, and stimulate every time you feed. :)

well it is a night and day improvement Literally. Yesterday afternoon She was a wet dish rag today I had to be quick to catch her in order to feed her.

Robert - I fully understand that they don't poop every time you stimulate, and not that this is either here nor there, but they surely do pee more than once a day, whether stimulated or not, and will usually do this while laying down. But what I am in disagreement on is when the word ''only'' is used ahead of do it ''once'' or ''twice'', like there is something bad going to happen if you do it more. I bottle fed 17 last year and I couldn't remember who pooped and who didn't, and I didn't see the need to write it down, so I just stimulated every time, and if they had to poop they pooped, and if they didn't have to poop they didn't poop. What I am saying is this: ''There is no harm in stimulating every time.'' And there is actually an aspect to stimulation that could serve as an advantage: It encourages a fawn to ''nurse''. I have seen fawns on more than one occassion standing there wondering what to do, and as soon as they were stimulated they began to suck. Not trying to argue here Robert, and I'm not even sure that we do disagree. I am just trying to help those that don't know to better understand the words ''need, only, and no harm'' in their proper perspective of ''stimulation every time or not''. :) Mark

I know there are different oppinions on fawns and what works for some doesnt always work for otheres. I stimulate for pee every time i feed and i only do the play-do factory

(thats what my kids call it) twice a day, morning and night.

Now i will say that i dont believe in using too many of the home remedies anymore. Though good for there time and maybe still affective i just think that our industry has grown leaps and bounds from years past. There are alot of great products out there that can be used to relieve such issues in one use or two versus 5 days of treatment. With the growing knowledge from our working Vets to the advancements in probiotics and nutrition that we can use. I know many of you still use these things and im not saying they do not work. I know that in my program i dont mess around. Vet is on speed dial, probiotics and meds are on hand with there help we can turn most issues around in the same day.

Good luck i wish you the best

she is pooping and peeing on her own without stimulation. Her poop is still yellow and watery. I did hit her with a pretty good dose of antibiotics yesterday so tommorow I will introduce the probiotics. Other than the squirts she seems very happy and healthy and nothing like she did this time yesterday.

Ok New symptom it doesnt seem to bother her but when I rub her sides or pick her up it almost sounds like there is plastic film crinkling under her skin......Has anyone ever experienced this? As far as eating goes she is taking the bottle once I insert it into her mouth and she starts crying for more when Im done so I bumped it up from 2 oz every 3 hrs to 3 oz every 3 hrs. She is running now and her poo is starting to firm it's more of a brown paste instead of yellow water.

Edit: I will post a new topic about the crackling sound.

she isnt dehydrated anymore she is acting quite well compared to what she was, it just feels like she has gas under her skin now.

Perhaps you can contact Dr. Jay or the other DVM or Scott, directly via the forum. Just a thought.
