Is it common practice to Saw-off the horns of bucks durring the rut to prevent injury from fighting?

I'll add that we do as well. We have a herd of over 700 animals and we lose some every fall. We've tried it both ways and we lose fewer if we saw them. There is always some stress running them through the chute and you may lose a few just from that exercise, but it is fewer than if you don't saw them. They can do a lot of damage even with the sawed antlers.

I don't cut my older bucks, 3+ years , they all weigh usually 300+ pounds, without the spring from their antlers I end up with more dead from crushed skulls. They are 10 of them in a 9 acre pen so they have enough room to avoid each other, alos never let the food run out, it keeps them away from the feed all at once.

Thanks guys!! CuritsLoyd, first of all GOOD LORD I have never ever seen a deer over 200lbs before, I was a Navy brat and so moved close to 35 times in my life so I just wasn't around hunting or Whitetail deer, I only got into hunting about 2 years ago. I just fell in love with the animals.....and the meat. However to my point, by "..without the spring from their antlers I end up with more dead from crushed skulls." is that because the Buck are so big that keeping the antlers grants some buffer for them when and if they do fight vs no antlers and two giants essentially head butting each other? Or maybe even running into the fence.

Thanks again for the responses guys I really appreciate it!!

I cut them all but one, always an older one. It has worked well for me. I thinks he probably stops any real wars and im sure the others try to stay away. Like the idea of keeping feed in the pen, I use thunder valley tube type feeder...maybe that helps.

Nice, I hadn't looked at it that way Warren. Thank you for your advice!
