I don't know much about deer, but they walk through my yard every day, sometimes multiple times. They come right to my back door to eat the Kentucky bluegrass we put down last summer, plus our yard is full of baby pine trees.

There's a mother and 3 fawns/deer (not sure how old they are). There's also a buck that stays with them, but it useually only comes out to the edge of the woods.

There's something wrong with the ears of the smallest deer. It's ears droop down and they look like something is growing on the inside. It also looks like it has sores around only it's left eye.

I know it's just a wild deer and there's probably nothing I could do for it, but I was just curious if anyone knows whats wrong with it.

Here's a few pictures that best show what i'm talking about:

I'm in NY, just south of the Catskill Mountains.

The second picture looks like the deer has red on its face, but that's just an artifact in the picture because the camera was pointed into the sun.

All the other deer look normal without any problems. This one doesn't seem to be as smart as the others. It doesn't have a problem walking over and eating our grass while were outside, the others tend to stay away and they're more jumpy when you make noise.

It looks kind of like it ears are ripped on the ends. Could it have been attacked by something, survived, and then got an infection?

Would a nice subcutaneous injection of Ivermectin cure this condition?

Or could the nice lady pour some Cydectin or Ivermectin onto some feed for the deer who will then ingest the de-wormer/parasite killing drug?

Are mites killed off by Cydectin or Ivermectin (both are usually available from a local Vet).

That deer looks like Darren at the Pa auction the day after he passed out.

I think I would inject him with a 300 win mag and do him a favor.

I'm not sure why, but they stopped coming down to the house. I don't know if they don't travel as far in the winter or maybe our grass is too short and they don't want it anymore. They haven't been down to the house in 3 days, but I saw them walking farther back in the woods yesterday.

I guess its not that common of a problem if nobody seems to know what it is.

I'm not going to shoot it. I'll either let nature take its course or maybe find a local wildlife organization to send the pictures to and they can decide to treat or kill it.

Do you read these messages closely Alltracturbo?

Deer farmers have not seen this likely because they regularly deworm and care for their deer such that most farmers don't allow ear or deer mites to consume their animals. Take a look at the link I posted, see the ugly picture. Look familiar?

Alltracturbo,

No doubt this is a parasite problem. As stated if you pour Ivermic or an equal product on some grain it would more than likely cure the problem this poor animal has. It would be the most humane thing a private person could do for a wild creature.

Do what Jack said put some poor on wormer on some feed. This should kill the parasites causing this.

Yes, i've read every post here including the link you posted. Nobody seemed to know with any certainty what it could be other than it "might" be caused by a tick or other parasite infection.

The link you posted only talked about the effects if installing feeding devices that contain tickicide, but didn't talk about the diseases the ticks cause. I saw the picture, but didn't think it looked that similar to the pictures I took.

I emailed my local vet and sent them the pictures to see if they can help. Maybe they'll be able to give me something if it is a parasite problem.

could be cauliflower ear from deer MMA

:D Thats the first thing I thought of when I saw it.

Also, the deer showed up again yesterday, but not today. It looked like the red sores around its eye healed.

I just don't get it. You ask for opinions on a diagnosis..you got it. You ask how to treat it...you got it. BUT, you choose to ignore the the advice and want a second opinion from a vet. The advice you got is from some of the best deer farmers in the business with many years of experience. There is no vet alive that has that much expertise.

Please do the worming. It will NOT harm the animal and can do nothing but benefit it and the rest of the deer in the area.
