How confident can I be in a successful pregnancy by doing artificial insemination from one straw that I buy?

Not speaking as an expert, but it seems there are many, many factors that determine success rates in AI. The guys that do it regularly seem happy with anything above 75% take rate. If you are considering AI and have little experience, you might think about having an established farm take your deer to their place and perform the AI along with the others. AI is very tricky business.

T-Hat said it. If you have a low number of deer or no facility to handle them in I would look into either buying a breeder/(shooter) or sending your doe to be live bred. With live breeding you are 100% going to take unless there is something wrong with the doe her self. Along the lines of buying a breeder, a breeder to you might be someone else's shooter. No a days you can get some really nice genetic bucks that are heading to the preserve. Also I have seen it every year there are places looking for shooters right around the first of the year. If you wanted to could buy a buck breed with him and then sell him around the first of the year probably for the same or close to the same money you bought him for. That is way cheaper than AI and still diversifies the genetics in your herd.

Thanks that's a great idea! Buy the buck then sell him as a shooter.. I just saw that I could get great genetics to start our farm out right by buying the straw at a fraction of the price.. the more I looked into A.I. seems like alot of breeders to cervical insemination. That's way more complex than I was thinking. I was hoping to hire a vet type professional to perform the insemination naturally through the cervix. Didn't know if you guys generally had success that way.
We are just starting out, getting 2 doe this spring which are already bread from what I understand. So was hoping to throw in another set of even better genetics, then more doe.

I suggest you stop spending money and start learning first.

No ****. We have only bought a fence and have 2 doe and one young buck coming.. didn't spend money on them. All we have invested is on the fence. I joined this forum for advice before I spent money on anything I wasn't sure about. But thanks for the advice.

To answer your question i would be thinking on the lines of 50-50 doing it Cervix. I have been doing my own for 5-6 years and went 100% the first 3, now i am down to 70-80% which is not to bad. I would suggest you think of nothing but raising stocker bucks. You can buy great bucks all day long for $100-$150 and make great 2yr old bucks that you can move. Make sure your females are of decent production lines and go for it.
