Good Morning Folks!

I'm sure this has been discussed before but wanted to know everyone's stance on yearling does (First Time Breeding) being a part of your AI program. Was told yearlings don't have as good of conception rate and they should be live bred to get a year under there belt. What do you think!?

We always had good success with yearlings. More than enough success to justify AI'ing them.

Kinda depends on your method of Ai.......I do my own here and i always let them get live bred the first year.

With the good feed we give our coming yearlings most will be of good size for AI.
If they were in with a buck almost all would get bred.
Any animal will do better the first time it comes in heat with live coverage. But with that said yearling will do fairly well with LAP AI if of good body size. But will usually not do as well as older does that have had fawns. But like Roger said it is worth the chance for genetic improvement and any that breed will put you a year ahead in the deer business.

Hello, Four Seasons Whitetails.
It caught my I when you wrote that you do your own AI. I am very interested in doing my own AI here on my farm. Would you or anyone else for that matter know where I might go or who to contact to get the proper training. I am aware a lisence is requierd for Lap AI so I am asking about vaginal.

Best to hook up with a farmer that does their own or even talk with one of the Vet's that may be working in your area.

Its a pretty simple process as long as you do all the steps up to the part of dropping the semen in.
