Hi

How are Axis Deer in the cold and snow if nutrition and medical are up to standards?

Specifically for Central/Northern NY (around zip code 13486)

-That area is usually snowiest spot east of Rockies, Jan and Feb lows around 15-20 degrees F.

G'day Brian.I have a couple of hundred chital. They are a tropical deer.I never get snow, maybe 50 frosts a year were temp drops to minus 2 deg C.They require plenty of cover,& energy at this period.I achieve this by feeding molasses ad-lib & setting grain feeders to go off several times after midnight. They shiver ,but they don't shiver out. After three days of wet windy weather I expect some die back. They make up for it with high fecundity.Chital cannot store energy like other species, they can only carry a max of 6% fat,to body weight.Proximity to sheep is a major concern due to malignant catarrhal fever .Chital are difficult, they are not a deer for beginners Good luck.Sharkey

Axis deer don't like the cold, but we did not lose any during that last cold snap in Texas, Ranch stayed below 6 for about 1 week. Lost a well, but that is another story.

I think Jim Moses of Dakota Outfitters in OH has axis. I believe he keeps them in a large barn durring the winter months though. He has several exotics that I had never heard of previously being so far north.
