Blood Meal in feed

I am new at the deer farming game. I was wanting to know if anyone has used blood meal in their feed? what are the advantages and disadvantages of using these type products? Please help with any information. Thanks

Blood meal is linked to MAD COW Desease, so I would not even think of it as a mix for any animal feed even though it was used as one time. I think that the FDA has banned it as a feed supplement. It is used mainly for fertilizer now

We need to do a much better job educating new un-inexperienced deer farmers in the precautions to prevent CWD. NO ANIMAL PRODUCTS OR BY-PRODUCTS, SHOULD BE FED TO DEER AT ANYTIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know horse and cow by products are banned but I don't know about pigs. The nutritionist I spoke to said he uses it in his own show goat feed and several large dairy operations. He also said the FDA has never found the pig based blood meal to ever carry or pass any prions for CWD. That is why I ask about it. If someone has other information on pig blood meal, let me know. Thanks

Why take the chance? Bloodmeal will not increase antler development any more than a good vegetable additive. Regardless of what your nutritionalist says, a prion can be passed along in any vehicle. A prion is a protien that can only be destroyed by disrupting its molecular structure like exposure to intense heat or radiation. Neither are used in the preparation of bloodmeal therefore it is theroetically possible for a prion to exist in the meal.

Scott, I see your point. I didn't know this. I thank everyone for their input. This is why I ask. You can't depend on a nutritionist to know it all or find out the truth that may hurt a sale of a product. Thanks again. I still have a lot to learn.
