I was wondering how much dex and Draxxin should i give a doe fawn that is 4 months old that has blue tongue. We have giving her 3 days of Dex and Bananmine already.

I don't know much about the shotgun approach with meds people often use to treat EHD. I was wondering if you had the blue tongue confirmed by necropsy of lesions in another case or PCR results? Often PCR results show negative for EHD even though the animal has blue tongue. I hadn't heard of a blue tongue case this year. I believe if your doe fawn has lived three days now I would give her 1cc of Draxxin. There are people on here who know a lot about meds who will likely help you more and give more insight. I hope she pulls through.

Let me first say I know nothing about meds. I read everthing I can on this forum and talk with a few of the members and try my best. My first deer this year that showed signs of EHD i darted her ( a yearling) with 1cc of compounded dex and 1 cc of draxxin. She was dead within 72 hours. The last deer that showed signs was a 5 month old buck fawn. The first day I saw signs I hit him with 2cc of draxxin and 3cc of compounded dex. The 2nd day he got 3cc of compounded dex. The 3rd day he got 3 cc of compounded dex. Nothing the 4th, and the 5th day he got 1cc of draxxin. Nothing on the 6th day, and the 7th day he got 1.5 cc of compounded dex. Nothing on the 8th day and the ninth day we worked the heard and while I had him in the chute he got 1cc of draxxin and 1cc of the dex. His eye swelling is gone and the only difference is his coat looks a little rough. But, he is alive day 12. Thanks Jerrilee Cave!

Sir, if your fawn truly has blue tongue your still dealing with a milder form of the virus! And can attack your animals immune system enough to cause other complications even death , I would like to recommend u hold off on the banamine continued daily doses can be harmful , in the long run just do your best to keep young fawn hydrated and keep up antibiotic us draxxin is a excellent synthetic antibiotic I have used exceed also in past good luck M Kwitowski

Our common sense only gets us so far with medicine. When I don't know the answer, I too call Dr Jerri Lee. Lol

Jerrilee was happy to read your fawn is still around 12 days after u suspected the virus I have dealt with same appeared success in past only to have animal clock out a month latter to other complications caused by the virus please keep an eye on your fawn about all the complications I dealt with after letting my guard down were respiratory they called it pasterela a form of bacteria pneumonia at OSU ! What I learned from that was draxxin and dex helped great early But Batril 100 and sulmet r my antibiotics of choice if they servive the storm good luck M Kwitowski

No sir, years ago when I was dealing with constant yearly virus deaths , I was stuck on the use of draxxin for reasons it was the hot drug on the Market , but was advised by one of the Vets, at OSU, that Batril and sulmet r more effective for this form of bacterial pneumonia so what I started doing was if a animal appeared to make it ,I would medicate drinking water with liquid sulmet first 3 to 5 days Then follow up with Batril few weeks later , but please. Understand what I feel has worked for my farms over the years at this time of year not everyone will agree with and I do respect that !
