Cervids
Requirements to move cervids interstate vary with every state. BOAH cannot track the requirements for each state since they are all different and constantly changing. The producer or herd veterinarian needs to contact the state-of-destination to be sure all requirements are met before moving any animals.
As a reminder, BOAH is no longer sampling cervids for CWD at state-inspected slaughter plants. Sampling is still required, but producers will need to find another source for sampling. Questions should be directed to Dr. Shelly Chavis at 260/450-2139 or [email protected].
BOAH continues to offer training for individuals who want to become Certified CWD Sample Collectors. The day-long training will be offered periodically to give producers more options for complying with herd CWD testing requirements, now that USDA has eliminated funding for such tests. However, producers who prefer can still use their veterinarian or Purdue ADDL for CWD sampling. For questions about the training, contact Dr. Shelly Chavis at 260/450-2139 or [email protected].
Missouri has confirmed CWD in two wild deer from Macon County. The positive bucks were harvested within two miles of a Macon County hunting preserve. Currently, the state is collecting additional tissue samples for CWD testing of deer in the area where the deer were taken.
The 2011 CWD sampling conducted during Indiana’s fall harvest did not find any deer positive for the disease. A total of 869 deer were sampled from hunter-harvests and road-killed deer. CWD has never been detected in more than 12,200 deer sampled from 2002 to 2011.
