I have a 3yo buck that I will be using to back up 20 AI does.

Last yeat at 2yo I used him for the first time as back up for 13 does and I also put him with 7 large doe fawns.

He covered 6/7 fawns but there were 4 AI does that came out empty.

I am AIing in 10 days and would like to know if I can have this buck in some type of vitamin or anything else that might boost his testosterone level. Would this be wise or could it have been that last year at 2 there were just too many does for him to handle.

Any advice will be appreciated. Thanks

EG

So last year he backed up 13 total adult does and 4 never fawned at all?

Were there some that didn't take to the A/I that he did breed in the second cycle?

How large of a pen is it they were all in?

Is he a heavy chaser or more of a tender of the does? Meaning does he chase around a lot after the does or does he get on one hot doe and stay next to her the whole time and maybe ignore does who are also hot but he doesn't work them because he is preoccupied with the first doe?

I was just talking with a friend of mine who said one of his bucks will do that. Just hang tight with one hot doe and ignore the others and that this can last 3 days or so. If he was doing this with the doe fawns that might be why he didn't breed the does that missed on the A/I.

Just thinking out loud is all.

Out of 13 AI does, 8 took the AI and out of the remaining 5 only 1 fawned. In addition, of the 7 doe fawns 6 of them were fawned to him.

The pen is about 1/2 acre and we never thought of him just chasing a doe for a long time. The chasing appeared normal although at the beginning he seemed to ignore all of the does. We imagine that it was because the Ai does were not yet in the second cycle and the fawns were not yet in their first.

This is the reason I want to see if I can get him on some type of vitamin, although he seems very strong.

Thanks Roger.
