Has anyone darted does for live breeding with pmsg. I would like to live breed my does earlier than what is normal in south alabama. They naturally breed here late January. If I dart them earlier will they come in heat or do you have to use cidr's?

It is my understanding that the cidr STOPS them from coming into heat. The pmsg brings them into heat. Someone else can expand on this better than i. I'm sure there is more to it

Sorry Brett, I don't know the correct answer. I believe the cidr is needed to trigger the cycle. Up north you can back their cycles up about three weeks without problems for pasture breeding. If you move them back into October trying to AI conception will become more difficult. Cidr-ing alone will not make them cycle.

In cattle, lutalyse is often used to begin the time breeding cycle instead of CIDR's. I have heard that lutalyse is not as effective with deer, and assume that is why it is not routinely used. I only bring this up since something is needed to prevent heat/ restart the cycle prior to PMSG, and if you're willing to experiment, lutalyse may be another option to experiment with.

Cidrs keep them from cycling.  Lutayse knocks off the CL and resets the clock on her cycle.  We use a shot of lutalyse when we put ciders in.  None of these really make her cycle, they just help us group them up for AI work.  If they aren't ready to cycle, you won't bring them in.

So, with just lutalyse and no CIDR in a deer, would they cycle again too soon?

Gentle , the CIDR has a natural hormone that is released into the animals bloodstream , and if handled properly can used more then once! I have used PMSG 3 different ways over the years 48 hrs before CIDR removal for ******l at time of CIDR removal and the hell with it times when CIDR had fallen or was pulled out the best succes for me was Pmsg at CIDR removal 56 to 62 hours after pmsg injection , about 85 percent over years second best 48 hr before CIDR removal about 60 percent 0 percent with just PMSG in that hour window I never use a backup buck. To make things easy to calculate , good luck M Kwitowski

How many days do you leave cidr's in? I havd heard from 12-18 days.my schedule allows me to leave in for 17 days this year is that to long? Should i try to get them pulled sooner?

My average over the years has been 14 days when I was AIing myself ******lly , but once I started using a lap crew we planned schedule together 10 to 16 days usually what helped me was having a family member that was a veterinarian and enjoys bringing his kids over to feed snacks to the animals good luck M Kwitowski
